Commentary

‘Al-mus-taq-dimiina – (those who have gone ahead), this word is plural of mus-taq-dimun, which has come out from ‘is-taq-daam, and from the same, the word yastaq-dimuun has passed. Origin of this word is qa-da-ma. Qaduum means “to come”. ‘Is-taq-daamun means “to go forth, to pass away”. From the same, the words “taq-diim (priority, precedence) and qadiim (old, ancient, antiquated)” etc. have been derived.

‘Al-musta’-khiriina – (those who come hereafter), it is plural from the subject musta’-khir, its origin is ‘a-kha-ra. ‘Akhara means “to survive, to come behind, to follow”. ‘Ista’-khaar means “to lag in any case”. Words taakhiir (delay, postponement), ‘aakhirah (the world to come, futurity) and muta-‘akh-khiriin (late, the moderns) etc. have been derived from the same origin.

Allah Almighty commands: We, only We give life and death, and when any mankind dies, We are his Inheritors also. All good or evil deeds of the entire human beings have been on Our record. We know complete circumstances of those who have gone ahead and those who come after them. We are well Aware of those who lead and who follow, who excels in performing good works and who keeps back by making excuses.

O mankind! We are your Lord and We shall gather the entire human beings together on a prescribed Day. And in accordance with Our knowledge and wisdom, We shall punish the wrongdoers with justice and equity.
