Commentary
‘illaa – (unless), actually these are two words – ‘in and laa. ‘in means “if” and laa means “not”. In writing, both words have been jointed and the “n” is a silent letter.

Commentary
’Amala – (work), whatsoever a man practices, is his work, conduct. Here it aims “of conduct”, that is to say; your son is evildoer.
Maa  laysa  laka  bihii  ‘ilm – (that whereof thou hast no knowledge), i.e. you should not ask for such thing, about which you don’t know that whether it is suitable or otherwise, for example, “deliverance of Kan-‘aan (son of Noah).

Commentary
It has been described earlier that entire members of the family of Noah (peace be upon him) rode in the ship, but a son named Yam, whose surname was Kan-aan, did not ride. Noah (peace be upon him) caused to understand him: Ride with us in the ship. But the heart of the son had been inclined in amusement with his friends, who were of the same nature. He had been living in the house of Noah (peace be upon him), but was a vagabond. Companions of Noah (peace be upon him) were of simple dispositio…

44.  And it was said: O earth! Swallow thy water and O sky! Be cleared of clouds! And the water was made to subside and the Commandment was fulfilled; and it (the ship) came to rest upon (the mount) Al-Judi and it was said: A far removal for wrongdoing folk!           44.  Wa  qiila  yaaa-‘arzub-la-‘ii  maaa-‘aki  wa  yaa-samaaa-‘u  ‘aqli-‘ii  wa  giizal-maaa-‘u  wa  quzi-yal-‘amru  wasta-wat  ‘alal-Juu-diyyi  wa  qiila  bu’-dal-lil-qawmiz-zaalimiin.

Commentary
‘Ib-la-‘ii – (Swallow!), it is a feminine word of command, which has been derived from the word bal-‘un. Bal-‘un means “to swallow). Here; it aims “to imbibe the water, to absorb”.
‘Aqli-‘ii – (Stop!), it is also a feminine word of command from the word ‘aqlaa’, which has come out from the word qal-‘a. Qal-…
