After that, Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, blessings and peace be on Him) directed the people: None will talk with these three persons {Ka’b bin Malik, Maraarah bin ‘Ar-Rabii’ and Hilal bin Umayyah (May Allah be pleased with them)}. My world was darkened. Everything had become stranger from me. We passed over fifty days in such condition. My other two companions set out to their homes for mourning, but I was stronger than all others physically and younger, used to offer congregational prayers and wander in bazaars. After prayer, I used to salute the Messenger (grace, blessings and peace be on Him), but when I used to behold Him (grace, blessings and peace be on Him), He used to turn His face without talking.

After observing these circumstances, I climbed at the wall of Abu Qataadah’s house (May Allah be pleased with them), who was my cousin (paternal) and had love with me. I saluted him. By God, he did not reply. I came down being disappointed. Then I was passing through the bazaar and heard – one villager of Syria, who had come to sell a mercantile grain, was in search of me. The people indicated him towards me. He came unto me and gave a letter, sent by the king of Ghassaan. It was written in that letter: I have heard that your Leader (grace, blessings and peace be on Him) has rejected you and now you are in adverse condition. Come unto us, we shall entertain you properly. After reading the letter, I thought: this another misfortune has reached. And I cast that letter into the oven.

After forty days, a courier of God’s Messenger (grace, blessings and peace be on Him) came and said: It is commanded that you should live alone (separate from tour wife). This commandment was also for my other two companions. Hilal bin Ummayyah sent his request: I am an old man and needy of an attendant.

Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, blessings and peace be on Him) permitted him in these words: Your wife can serve you, but you should remain away from her. The people said to me: You should do the same also. I said: No, I am adult. When complete fifty days were over, Allah Almighty sent His Revelation and my error was forgiven. The people ran unto me with glad-tidings and I attended the Court of Messenger (grace, blessings and peace be on Him). His Face had been blooming with happiness, Commanded: The day of Today, with effect from you have born, is the best day. Allah Almighty has forgiven you. I requested: I wish to sacrifice my entire wealth for the welfare of needy people, due to this happiness. Messenger (grace, blessings and peace be on Him) commanded: No. You should keep some wealth for your own living also. Then I requested: O Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, blessings and peace be on Him)! God has forgiven me due to the reason that I spoke the truth. I promise that until death, I shall never tell a lie. Therefore, till today, I have never told a lie intentionally.

I consider that my this deed is the best that I stated my condition truly as it was, before the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, blessings and peace be on Him), and did not join those people, in whose reproof, verses were revealed because of producing their false excuses.

FROM THIS INCIDENT we should learn that we should abstain from deceiving anyone and telling a lie, and whatsoever we do, should do fearing Allah Almighty, because He is Aware of Open and Hidden. And in this connection, we should also be saved from those tokens; which have been described about the Hypocrites, because none can deceive Allah Almighty, and matter of a Muslim is, first of all, in God’s Hand.

A Companion (May Allah be pleased with him) of the Messenger (grace, blessings and peace of Allah be on Him) says: I participated in every Battle (Ghazwah) along with the Prophet of Allah Almighty save the Battle of Tabuuk. In those days, I was most powerful and prosperous. I had two camels first time in life during that period, which were very strong and able to travel duly loaded fully.

Before this Battle, Messenger of Allah Almighty did never proclaim for any Battle; in which He had to participate, but for the Battle of Tabuuk, He announced and commanded to be prepared for the Battle of Tabuuk. At that time, the weather was very hot, journey was very long, the Army had to cross very vast deserts; and the war was against a most powerful enemy. Therefore, every individual was informed very clearly that they had to move for war against so and so enemy and make full preparation.

At that time, crops of fruit were ready, the people desired to take rest under shadowy trees and enjoy with the fruit. I had also inclined towards the same. I used to intend for preparation in the morning daily, but in the evening, when I used to see that nothing is done, then I used to think: Ok! I would move up in the tomorrow morning certainly.

It was in my heart: I have every that thing which I need, so there is no need to be prepared. When I shall wish; I shall move up immediately. In such contrivances, the Army went forth and had gone very far. I wanted to proceed and join them, but in it also; I delayed. And at last, I had remained behind. Then I observed that around me, there were only Hypocrites and excusable people, even that the Messenger along with the Army arrived at Tabuuk. Even afterwards too, one Ansaari (permanent resident of Madinah), named Abu Khasiimah (May Allah be pleased with him) mustered courage and joined Them. But I could not go forth.

When they returned, I thought: I can be saved from the anger of the Messenger (grace, blessings and peace be on Him) by making any false excuse. Then I determined: I shall speak the truth only without any hesitation, whether I am punished or otherwise. Some; more than eighty persons were present in the Court of the Messenger (grace, blessings and peace be on Him) and wanted to please Him by telling false excuses. Messenger (grace, blessings and peace on Him) accepted their excuses and condition of their hearts was abandoned on Allah Almighty. When I reached my turn, I spoke the truth: I have no excuse, but delayed due to laziness only. Messenger (grace, blessings and peace of Allah be on Him) said: You have spoken the truth, now go away and wait for the decision of Allah Almighty. I returned and arrived at home.

The people said to me: Go back unto the Messenger (grace, blessings and peace of Allah be on Him) and produce any false excuse. He (grace, blessings and peace of Allah be on Him) is gentle and merciful, will forgive you. I asked: Has any other done like me? The people replied: Yes! There are two more persons like you, who spoke the truth. They are Maraarah bin ‘Ar-Rabii’ and Hilal bin Umayyah. I said: They are very pious persons, I shall follow them. And I refused to produce untrue matter.

When Muslims were permitted to fight, then in the Chapters of Holy Qur’an, revealed in Madinah, the way of fighting was explained, along with this, customs of society were taught simultaneously and education of politics was given completely. Many times, Messenger of Allah Almighty (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him) commanded the Islamic Army Himself and at some occasions, He (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him) appointed any of His trustworthy Slaves (Companions – May Allah be pleased with them) as commander. First Battle of Islam was “the Battle of Badr”; in which Messenger (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him) participated and the last was “the Battle of Tabuuk”. In the Battle of Badr, the Muslims had to fight without intention and preparation. Whereas, in the Battle of Tabuuk, they made preparation intentionally, but the Battle did not reach a certain point. The mention of this last Battle has been explained in the subject Surah Tawbah.

It was unavoidable badness of the battles that difficulties were produced in understanding Islam. Although, the selfish people could not put down Islam through battles, but; they continued to hide the actual excellence of Islam, in the clouds of dust. Islam was desirous to stop blood-shedding and mischief, but the wicked and selfish people said: The war will never over in the world and the manner of keeping the feeble under influence will continue.

By force, Islam considered it suitable to arrange for senses of selfish people, under the circumstances of that period that their ears should be pulled. But an advantage was reaped from it also, which was, it helped very much for organizing the Muslims themselves. The traitors, the weak in belief, the deceitful and hypocrites were separated, and only sincere Muslims remained in the field. By suffering from difficulties and hardships, steadiness in intentions, maturity in determination and moderateness in dispositions had been grown.

One can meditate in only the expedition i.e. the incidents of the Battle of Tabuuk according to the subjects of this Chapter. It was so much severe test that in the beginning, even one group of Muslims had been entangled in confusion. In the end, the Light of their Belief guided them and they returned unto the Straight Path. At that time, the strength of Muslims was not in hundreds but in thousands. But in the course of time, they all got ready for a difficult journey. Only indolent persons, excusable and insolent people remained behind.

The Hypocrites, who were mixed up with Muslims, were known due to their trickeries. And Divine Revelation betrayed their all secrets. And they entire had been separated by making false excuses. There were only three such sincere Muslims, who remained behind at home due to procrastination, and their repentance was accepted after a very severe punishment. Out of them, one person was Ka’b bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him), who describes his account of circumstances himself about this Battle. In the next two lessons the same will be discussed.

When entire people began to honor the Messenger (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him), His love and respect settled in every individual’s heart (whether he/she was elder or little), then Lord of the Worlds selected him (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him) to appoint His Messenger. God Almighty commended his manners and commanded: You are Our Messenger. Invite the people of Your house, city and country, cause them to understand and proclaim in the entire world: O People! The way of your living is not approved by your Creator and Lord. Give up considering yourselves superior to others. Your Creator and Master is the Greatest. Take up with your mind that you are His servants and obey His commandments only.

Allah Almighty enlightened the Heart of the Messenger with His Light (Nuur), then He was sure that His Lord and Protector was Allah Almighty. He (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him) began to think: “Neither anyone can harm Me and nor do for Me good”. He gripped up His loins of spirit for obedience of the commandments of God Almighty. Those people who had gentleness of the good; they accepted His slavery. But those; who did not have faith in the quality of mankind but the selfishness, they said: Certainly He desires pomp and show of the world by means of His influence with a new method. Because near to them “There can be no other wish of a wise mankind other than it”.

The map of the world changed due to their misunderstanding as such, and what was required to be, that could not be happened. Messenger of Allah Almighty tried His best to explain that “I am not desirous of anything for Myself, Whatever I say, say for your benevolence and goodness”. He warned them, suffered and endured molestation for complete thirteen years, but they did not feel.

At last, He produced His Message before those people who used to come at Makkah. Fortune of the both Worlds was written in the fate of the People of Madinah. They had been attached to the Messenger and prepared to sacrifice their lives and wealth on Him. Eventually, when the people of Makkah laid but to stake upon their persistence, then He inclined unto Madinah and established the foundation of Islamic Society.

There are one hundred fourteen Chapters in the Holy Qur’aan, from which eighty eight were revealed in Makkah whereas twenty six in Madinah. All principles regarding welfare and happiness of human beings were caused to know in the Chapters revealed in Makkah. In the fate of which people, there was felicity, they embraced Islam and got ready to follow the Instructions of the Messenger (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him). They learnt the lesson of patience and stability in Makkah, and when they were commanded in Madinah to fight, they proved that they were best fighters.

In the Chapters revealed in Madinah, the Messenger (Grace, Peace and Blessings of Allah on him) and His Companions (May Allah be pleased with them) were commanded: Fight against the people of Makkah and those people of the Scripture who have joined them, because they will not refrain without chastisement, but you should not be tyrants, because the aim of war is not any other but to remove the mischief only.

All those persons, who know history, writers and compilers of history, give evidence and they are unanimous in their opinion that Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), being a mankind, had more knowledge and wisdom than entire human beings of the world. Whichever opinion was expressed by Him after observing the circumstances, was the best judgment.

Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) used to escape from needless and absurd matters. The gaiety used to drip from His Visage. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was cheerful, used to like silence and remain silent. He used to remember the Creator and Lord of the world. The word “Allah” did already exist in Arab. But His (God’s) conception in the heart of Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was different from others.

He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) used to consider that “Allah” is One. He is not necessitous of any other. He is Knower, Hearer, Viewer and Wise. Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) used to remember Him with his tongue quietly and supplicate for Guidance. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was sociable and merry, and used to accept the Right immediately.

In human rights, all people were equal near to Muhammad (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), whether they were relatives or strangers, powerful or weak, rich or poor. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) used to love the miserable, and did not consider that the insolent were contemptible due to their poverty.

He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was never overawed by the kings or the despotic, and neither did He fear due to someone’s being vigorous. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) used to serve the gentle people and those who had good habits, and fascinate the hearts of the visitors. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) did not use to go back from him who used to come for meeting until the visitor wish to go away.

He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) used to ask the circumstances of His visitors and find out general circumstances of the public from the people. He used to do His work Himself i.e. milking the cattle Himself, repairing His shoes himself, patching His clothes Himself, and did not use to consider shame in using repaired shoes and patched clothes.

It is mentioned in the Sayings (Ahaadith) that Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) did never eat bellyful, even the bread of barley; until departure from this world. At His home, it never happened that the fire is kindled continuously, even sometimes; it was set after one month and sometimes after two months.

He used to take a few dates and water as food for living. Sometimes He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) tied stones on belly due to severity of hunger. He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was ready every time to help others, but never asked anyone to help Him (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam). He used to treat the people as humanity, whether those were own people or strangers.

Every individual (superiors and inferiors) used to acknowledge His politeness, trust, honesty and justice. Why did He have to fight besides having such higher virtues? He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) was not desirous of authority. He was fond of giving something to others instead of snatching something from the deserving person.

His (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) manner was sympathy and kindness with every human being. It is obvious that such generous and affectionate person cannot be content to molest someone else. Even then; He had to fight but why? He fought only for the reason that the Infidels of Makkah were indiscreet and unintelligent.

At the end of the subject Chapter, summary of the manners of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) has been described. That all was according to these virtues, whatsoever He performed in the life of this world, even that, His war against His enemies was also based on these ethics. His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) Battles were neither like robbers or plunderers, and nor for exercising authority over other people as a king, but to establish the life of peace and safety in the world and betterment/welfare of the humankind.

It was not His aim that He should inspire with awe by shedding blood of the human beings and they should be made slaves of Him forcibly, and they should be compelled to obey His every commandment; accepting Him as a king, and they should continue to provide the worldly things of luxurious enjoyment for Him.  

That period, when He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was sent in the world as an appointed Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), was extremely of tyranny and oppression. In the whole world, there did exist such people in every country who were selfish, slaves of their wishes and very fond of luxurious enjoyments. Oppressive people used to choose any tyrant and rebellious person as their leader and support him by establishing their own group. And they used to compel the public to provide the things for pleasantness of their life by saying him their king and using his name. And they used to treat the public as animals. The aim of every powerful person was to keep the subordinates under influence. The creature of the Creator (Allah Almighty) had been entangled in the paws of the tyrants. The humanity was near to end and the strong people wished to eat up the feeble totally and weak people; becoming blood-thirsty ravenous and fight those who were equal to them for snatching their prey. And everyone began to increase his strength and there was no other work for mankind save a general massacre and pillage, robbing, plundering and ravaging in the world.

Nature of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) was quite against the refractory people. His morality began to become according to natural temperament automatically; and protection of Allah Almighty was with him at every step. From the very beginning, He saw the universe from such angle, which was totally separate from the point of view of such people who had been entangled in worldly matters. He beheld that if the human being have to live in this world, for it, this is not the way, which has been spread in the public.

He used to search that way which should provide security to the human life and save his soul from confusion, restlessness and disturbance, not only ordinarily, but permanently. He did not find any such person in the world who might guide Him for this purpose. At that time, His (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) mind inclined more towards the loneliness. And for which object, the Supreme Physician (Allah Almighty) had sent him in the world with His especial Mercy, He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) began to complete that task.
