Moses asked: Why did you not follow me?

Chapter TAA-HAASurah – 20)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

92.  He (Moses) said: O Aaron! What held thee back when thou didst see them gone astray –

93.  That thou followedst me not? Hast thou then disobeyed my order?

94.  He said: O son of my mother! Clutch not my beard nor my head! I feared lest thou shouldst say: Thou hast caused division among the Children of Israel, and hast not waited for my word.
92.  Qaala  Yaa-Haaruunu  maa  mana-’aka  ‘iz  ra-‘aytahum  zalluuu.

93.  ‘Allaa  tattabi-‘an.  ‘Afa-‘asayta  ‘amrii.

94.  Qaala  yabna-‘umma  laa  ta’-khuz  bilih-yatii  wa  laa  bi-ra’-sii.  ‘Innii  khashiitu  ‘an  taquula  farraqta  bayna  Baniii-  ‘Israaa-‘iila  wa  lam  tarqub  qawlii.

Commentary

Yabna-‘umma – (O son of my mother!), actually this word is “Yaa-‘ibna-‘ummii”. It became “yabna-‘umma” in conversation and it is abbreviation of the same.

Tarqub – (took care), origin of this word is “raqaba”, which means “to look after, to guard”.

When the Children of Israel blamed that Samirii was the actual person who misled them in adoration of the idol of calf, then Moses (peace be upon him) moved unto Aaron (peace be upon him) due to religious passion. At that time he was being emotional religiously and his anger was out of his control. He clutched beard and hairs of the head of Aaron (peace be upon him); and said angrily: Why did you not treat these people as I would have treated them when they were going astray? I left you behind as my Caliph. Why did you disobey my order?

Aaron (peace be upon him) said: O my brother! Don’t be angry with me. Don’t clutch my hair of head and beard. I caused very much to understand them verbally but did not fight because you had ordered: Behold! Division should not be among the Children of Israel. I feared that two parties are necessary for fighting and you will be enraged that why we did not obey your order and why two parties of the Children of Israel were formed.

Worthy of worship is only Rahmaan

Chapter TAA-HAASurah – 20)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

  قَالُوا۟ لَن نَّبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَٰكِفِينَ حَتَّىٰ يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ 91

91.  They said: We shall by no means cease to be its votaries till Moses return unto us.
91.  Qaaluu  lan-nabraha  ‘alayhi  ‘aakifiina  hattaa  yarji-‘a  ‘ilaynaa  Muusaa.

Commentary

Nabraha – (we shall cease, desist), origin of this word is baraahun, which means “to desist from own place or to fall back from own saying”.

‘Aakifiina – (votaries, devotees), this word is plural of ‘aakif, which has been derived from “’akafa”. Its origin is ‘ukuufun, which means “to be bound by vow to the service (of)”. This word has passed in Suratul-Baqarah. The word ‘a’-takaaf is also from the same.

Prophet Aaron (peace be upon him) caused to understand the Children of Israel that “what are you doing this stupidity? Is this idol of a calf any such thing; which should be adored? Worthy of Worship is only Rahmaan (The Beneficent)”. But they began to relish from this adoration, because they had seen adoration of this kind during their stay in Egypt. Saying of Samirii had taken their hearts. He would have caused to understand them also that “who does know that Moses will return surely or otherwise?. Even if he came back, it will come to his mind that only the calf is worthy of worship. He had forgotten it. It is the reason that he has gone in search of any other God”.

The Children of Israel had been attracted as much from the nonsense talking of Samirii that they did put the command of Aaron (peace be upon him) aside and said: we shall continue adoring of the calf. After arrival of Moses (peace be upon him), it will be decided that what we should do. At this time, we shall not change our way of worship.

In these verses, it is being caused to understand the mankind that “obeying any person without thinking; is a sign of foolery. The mankind should not be deceived from wheedling by any person. Think before obeying any person’s command and consider that whether his command has some weight or otherwise.

Accepting the sayings of any person blindly or falling in love of any individual’s conjuration/charm is the work of foolish people. Intelligent person will use his sense certainly and he will not be entangled in the trap of any wicked.

A calf can neither hurt nor profit

Chapter TAA-HAASurah – 20)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

89.  See they not, then, that it returneth no saying unto them and possesseth for them neither hurt nor use?

90.  And Aaron indeed had told them beforehand: O my people! Ye are but being seduced therewith, and lo! Your Lord is the Beneficent, so follow me and obey my order.
89.  ‘Afalaa  yarawna  ‘allaa  yarji-‘u  ‘ilayhim  qawlaa.  Wa  laa  yamliku  lahum  zarranw-wa  laa  naf-‘aa.

Commentary

‘Allaa – (that it does not), actually this word has been made from two words: “‘an and laa”. ‘An is abbreviation of “‘anna”. Its Noun is omitted and that pronoun is “huu”, which is attentive unto “a calf”.

In the absence of Moses (peace be upon him), the Children of Israel began to adore the idol of a calf. When he (peace be upon him) returned and reproved them on their foolishness, then they made excuse that “Samirii fabricated a calf of the gold by melting those ornaments which we had thrown away (considering that those were useless for us), and a sound like the voice of a cow began to come out from it. He said to us! Worship it. So we began to worship the calf.

It has been commanded in this verse: Ask from them that whether the calf gives you answer of any question? Or can it hurt or profit you? O blinds of sense! If this very little matter did not strike you at your own, then at least, you had to accept that which Aaron (peace be upon him) was causing to understand you.

Aaron (peace be upon him) reminded them many times that being Mad with love of an idol of the calf was an act of going astray. Your Lord is the Beneficent and I also am His Prophet as Moses (peace be upon him). Therefore, you should obey my order and do whatever I say to you! Have you lost your senses entirely? If you are unable to understand yourselves then you should understand from the sayings of a Prophet.

87b.  but we were laden with burdens of ornaments of the folk, then cast them (in the fire), and thus As-Samirii  proposed-

88.  Then he produced for them a calf, a lifeless image, which gave forth a lowing sound; then they said: This is your god and the god of Moses, but he hath forgotten.
87b.  wa  laakinnaa  hummil-naaa  ‘awzaaram-min-  ziinatil-Qawmi  faqazaf-naahaa  fakazaalika  ‘alqas-Saamiriyy.

88.  Fa-‘akhraja  lahum  ‘ijlan-  jasadal-lahuu  khuwaarun-  fa-qaaluu  haazaaa  ‘ilaahukum  wa  ‘ilaahu  Muusaa;  fanasii.

Commentary

Hummil-naaa – (we were laden), it is past tense passive from the word tahmiil, which has come out from himlun. Himlun means “load”. Tahmiil means “to burden with load”. It aims “a burden had been loaded on us”.

‘Alqaa – (proposed), it is past tense from the word ‘ilqaa-‘un, which has been derived from “laqaa”. Laqaa means “to meet”. ‘Ilqaa-‘un means “to bring together, to join”. It aims “to produce in front, to disclose, to reveal”.

The Children of Israel said to Moses (peace be upon him): This plan has been designed by Saamirii. It is only which we did; that “we possessed abundant ornaments which were borrowed from the folk of Pharaoh, and we were laden with it like a burden. It was not of our use. We did cast it out from our possession. When Samirii saw the abundant ornaments, he made a plan and melted the entire ornaments. Then he fabricated an idol of the form of a calf, from the body of which; a sound like cow’s voice used to come out. Then he produced it before us and misled us (saying): It is your god, so you should adore of it. He said: Actually the god of Moses is the same also, but he forgot, and other all people followed him.

It has been written about Samirii that he was a clever person. On the other side, the Children of Israel had already been habituated of adoration like this being under the influence of Pharaoh. Therefore, Samirii succeeded in his trick easily.

87a.  Qaaluu  maaa  ‘akhlafnaa  maw-‘idaka  bimalkinaa -

Commentary

Maw-‘idun – (tryst, promise). Meanings of wa’dah and maw-‘idun are the same.

Malka – (power of choice, option, authority, ability), origin of this word is ma-la-ka, which is origin of malak too. It is used for “will, intention, mind etc.”

Moses (peace be upon him) used to cause to understand the Children of Israel: If you will obey my sayings, wealth of the religion and the world will be bestowed unto you. Shortly, Allaah Almighty will send His Scripture for your guidance. If you will follow the Commandments mentioned in that Scripture, success will kiss your feet.

The Children of Israel had observed personally that they were delivered from the misfortune as slavery; by obeying the command of Moses (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) has been rebuking them due to their worshipping of calf that “Has the appointed time passed too long that you forgot my sayings and did not trust in my promise? Or did you get ready on disobedience intentionally and did so much dangerous act that there is fear of falling down the wrath of Allaah Almighty upon you? Yet nearly one month earlier, I caused to understand you that I have been called on the Mount Toor for bringing Torah from Allaah Almighty. In these a few days, you forgot my promise and were involved in the evil of polytheism.

By this menace, the eyes of the Children of Israel were opened and they perceived that really they had erred great. They said to Moses (peace be upon him): We did not make any such plan intentionally that by rejecting your sayings, we should determine any separate religion or way of life.

Commentary

During those days, Saamirii, who was a deceitful person, fabricated a calf for the Children of Israel, from the inner of which, a sound used to come out. He said: Worship it!

It is on the record that at that time, the Children of Israel were six hundred thousand in numbers. All of them were misled by Saamirii except only twelve thousand people; who denied from his obedience, and they supported Aaron (peace be upon him), who warned them continuously, that they should worship Allaah Almighty only and should not ascribe plurality to Him.

It has been commanded in this verse: When Moses (peace be upon him) completed his fixed space of time on the Mount Toor and Torah was given to him, then Allaah Almighty informed him: We have put the Children of Israel in a trial in your absence and they have been deceived by Saamirii.

Moses (peace be upon him) returned unto his folk along with Torah. At that time he was angry and sad. He (peace be upon him) reproved the people on their state and said to them: O enemies of sense! You did know that Allaah Almighty has promised to give you Torah. And I had gone on the Mount Toor because I was called by Him for the same purpose. Then did you not depend upon such cheerful Promise of Such Kind and Beneficent Lord?

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

82.  And lo! Verily I am Forgiving toward him who repenteth and believeth and doeth good, and afterward walketh aright.

83.  And (it was said): What hath made thee hasten from thy folk, O Moses?

84.  He said: They are close upon my track, and I hastened unto Thee, my Lord, that Thou mightiest be well pleased.
82.  Wa  ‘Innii  la-Gaffaarul-liman  taaba  wa  ‘aamana  wa  ‘amila  saalihan  summah-tadaa.

83.  Wa  maaa  ‘a’-jalaka  ‘an-qawmika  Yaa-Muusaa.

84.  Qaala  hum  ‘ulaaa-‘i  ‘alaaa  ‘asarii  wa  ‘ajiltu  ‘ilayka  Rabbi  li-tarzaa.

Commentary

‘A’-jala – (it made hasten), it is past tense from the word ‘i’-jaalun, which has been derived from ‘a-ja-la. ‘Ujlatun means “hurry, quickness, haste”. ‘I’-jaalun means “to prepare for making haste”.

It is commanded: I am Great Forgiving also if the guilty is ashamed due to his sins, he repents, accepts with true heart that I am his Lord, does good acts and then stands firm on the same Straight Path, then I forgive his errors. There is no deficiency in My Mercy.

After that, the description is about fulfillment of that covenant which Allah Almighty made with Moses (peace be upon him) and by means of him, with the Children of Israel, that they should come upon the Mount Toor. Allaah Almighty will give the Scripture Torah for their guidance. According to that promise, Moses (peace be upon him) along with the Children of Israel flew unto the Mount Toor. Due to excessive longing, Moses (peace be upon him) left behind his companions and reached the Mount Toor quickly.

It was commanded: Why did you make more haste that you did leave your companions behind? He requested: I came forth immediately for acquiring Your pleasure. Those people are upon my track and are not far from me.

Then it was commanded to Moses (peace be upon him): Come upon this Mount to engage yourself in worship for forty days.
