Commentary

Sharaa-bun – (every that thing which is drinkable), Sharaab means “to drink” as ta-‘aam means every eatable thing.

Tusiimuuna – {you send (your beasts) to pasture}, this word has been derived from ‘isaamatun, origin of which is sawam. Sawam means “to graze, to feed”. ‘isaamatun is its active verb which means “to pasture”.

It has been described in this verse: Listen! It is Allah Almighty Who caused to rain from the sky, by which the land prospered and you obtained water for drinking. In the meadow, you release your animals for grazing and pecking, fill your bellies with grains, fruits and vegetables. Did you ever think that Who arranged this all? Those who reflect; know Allah Almighty by meditating into these arrangements, and they thank Him Who is the Greatest Benefactor and Who created these entire things for the mankind. And He (Allah Almighty) gave these things in the control of human being.

Some roads go not straight

Suratun-Nahl - (The Bee) - 16

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِقَصْدُ ٱلسَّبِيلِ وَمِنْهَا جَآئِرٌ وَلَوْ شَآءَ لَهَدَىٰكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ 9

9.  And Allah’s is the direction of the Way, and some (roads) go not straight. And had He willed He would have led you all aright.
9.  Wa  ‘alAllaahi  qasdus-Sabiili  wa  minhaa  jaaa-‘ir.  Wa  law  shaaa-‘a  lahadaakum  ‘ajma-‘iin.

(Section 1)

Commentary

Qasdu – (the straight), origin of this word is qasad, which means “the direction and the straight (both)”. Here it aims – the straight. Another word for it is mustaqiim, which also means straight. Qasdus-Sabiili means Siraatul Mustaqiim (the Straight Path).

Minhaa  jaaa-‘irun – {some of them (roads) go not straight, curved paths}.

In this verse, it has been cautioned to the human being that the people who apprehend correctly, for them, a straight path have been opened unto cognizance of Allah Almighty with this graciousness. The person who will choose this path and by reaping advantage from these favors; he will be thankful to The Real Benefactor, he will reach directly up to Allah Almighty. But that individual who was careless from The Real Benefactor due to being engaged in worldly pleasures, he went astray.

It is commanded that the person who will drive the benefit from the favors of Allah Almighty and believe in Him and grip up his loins for His gratefulness, he will be on the Straight Path. But some curved and crooked footpaths and pathways have come out also from this Straight Path, which eventually lead unto any forest of thorny bushes and trees. And there, mankind misses the right path.

If Allah Almighty had willed, He would have led the entire human beings towards the Straight Path. But this world has been created on such Established Order that there are both kinds of paths in it – straight and curved. Signs of the both have been explained and it has been informed to the mankind that he should use own sense to know about the Straight Path by means of these signs and go straight way.

Commentary

Shiqqun – (great trouble, causing weariness), origin of this word is shaqq. From it, two words have come out – shiqqun and shuqqun. Mushaqqat is also from the same, which means “hard labor, toil and pains etc.” Actual meaning of shiqqun is “to rend, to tear and divide into two pieces”. Shiqqil-‘an-fus means “to work as much hard that a man begin to feel himself dog tired, distracted.

Khaylun – (the horses), this word is used for all kinds of horses, not for only one kind. For one horse there is a word fars in Arabic language, which is quite different from the above. Like this, there are words – ‘ubul, nasaa’ and samaa’ etc. singulars of which do not tally with them.

It is commanded that your Lord Almighty made the animals obedient for you. If these did not exist, you would have been entangled in great trouble at the time of shifting your luggage. You should accept it that Allah Almighty is Full of Pity and Merciful on you. Out of these beasts of burden, there are horses, mules and asses, which are useful for riding, carriage and conveyance also. And by them, your dignity and honor increases twofold. In future, Allah Almighty will produce such sources of carriage and conveyance, about which you cannot think at this time.

6.  Wa  lakum  fiihaa  jamaa-lun  hiina  turiihuuna  wa  hiina  tasrahuun.

Commentary

Dif-‘un – (warmth, heat), it aims that you get hair, wool and leather from the cattle for preparing warm clothing and other things.

Turiihuuna – (you bring them home in the evening), origin of this word is ‘iraahatun, which has been derived from ra-wa-ha. Rawaah means “to go after sunset”. ‘Iraahatun is its active verb, which means “to bring back in the evening”. It aims that after pecking and grazing the whole day out, you bring your cattle back at home in the evening.

Tasrahuun – (you take them out to pasture), its origin is sa-ra-ha. Sarah means “to take the cattle towards pasture”.

It is commanded that Creator of these cattle is Allah Almighty, Who gave them under your control. Now you prepare clothing from their hair, wool and leather etc. for saving yourselves from the cold weather, drink their milk, and from the milk you prepare butter, ghee and cheese etc. also. You use some of them for ploughing in the land. When in the morning you take them towards pasture for grazing, and after grazing all day long; you bring them back to home at the descent of the sun below the horizon, there is jollity and beauty, by which honor and dignity is conferred to you on account of number of cattle’s ownership. Out of those, you eat the meat of lawful (halaal) animals. Did you ever think that Who Bountiful God created these cattle for you, and gave you sense and power to reap advantage from them, it is incumbent to Know and be thankful to Him?

Commentary

Attention of mankind has been drawn in this verse towards the universe around him, by looking which, first question arises that Who created this all? Lo! Hear from Us (Allah Almighty): We are Creator of the heavens and the earth, and whatsoever exists into them. All existing things have been working properly at own places under a strong and established arrangement. Nothing can be equal to Allah Almighty. He is the Highest and Exalted in all respect. Human beings are also His creature, origin of whom is a drop of fluid, which is called Semen. It has no power. Allah Almighty brought it up and promoted as much that it began to talk fluently, even that it began to find faults, make excuses, raise objections and deceive others. It became as much arrogant upon his power and strength that forgot own Creator and Lord.

And when Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) reminded him that these entire powers have been given by Allah Almighty, therefore, he should bow before Him. Then he began to produce absurd reasoning and say: I am not necessitous of Allah (God forbid), I myself can do everything. But it is his vain imaginations. No one has any power before Allah Almighty.

The thing which can be found only in Qur’aan

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

There is a prediction in this verse which is with as much faith and trust that it cannot be found anywhere save in the verses of Holy Qur’aan. In such circumstances, in which the enemies have besieged from all around and ready for causing trouble in every respect, at that time saying to the enemies unhesitatingly “You are going to reach your punishment very soon in the world”, is not work of any common person but a Messenger of Allah Almighty (peace be upon him). It aims clearly that “You all will be finished and the Government over the entire Arab will be of Islam”.

At that time, when these verses were revealed, it could not be think that these, a few Muslims will overcome upon the entire powerful people of Makkah. But Holy Qur’aan proclaimed clearly that “You are going to be seized in the Divine punishment”. ‘Ataaa  ‘AmrUllaahi (The Commandment of Allah will come to pass), these are three words in which that “Force” has been filled, Grace of which cannot be estimated.

They considered that the calamity is near to come, but after waiting for some days, when nothing was happened, then they began to say: Nothing will happen. And they said the same before the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) arrogantly. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) heard this with patience and turned towards Allah Almighty. Then it was commanded with the same dignity of satisfaction, which is disposition of Holy Qur’aan: Falaa  tasta’-jiluuh (so seek not ye to hasten it), there is no doubt in coming of torment. But it is being delayed for the reason that: may be those people who are fortunate, may change themselves and be saved from disgrace and anguish of the world and the Day of Resurrection.

After that it was commanded: Reap advantage from the respite. Behold! We have sent the secret of perpetual life unto Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) by means of Our trustworthy Angels (peace be upon them). The Messenger is Our chosen reliable Mankind. And We select Our Messenger by Our Wisdom and Knowledge, to whom We desire; from Our servants. The last Messenger of the world, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) has come unto you. He will describe you that Allah Almighty commands: I, only I am your Worshipped. Do not associate anything with Me, and give up those things from which I have forbidden you, so that you may be saved from My punishment. And do all such works for which I have commanded. Secret of success of the mankind’s life is hidden in it.

Commentary

It was the condition of the people of Makkah that when Merciful Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) caused to hear them Message of God Almighty, they did not feel like the ancient disobedient nations; even after hearing their Resurrection. Then it was caused to hear them the Commandment of Allah Almighty: Now the Command of Allah Almighty is near to reach, but you should consider that It has reached, because before sending doom on any nation, a Prophet (peace be upon him) is sent for their guidance. If they do not listen to the Messenger (peace be upon him) and trouble Him, then at first, any big calamity comes upon them in the world. After that (death), the number is of the Day of Resurrection.

Allah Almighty has appointed Me (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) as His last Messenger and sent unto you. If you will disobey Me, you will be punished and ruined. Because after Me, no Prophet will come, so My arrival is a Sign of the arrival of the Last Day (the general resurrection), for, what was required to be caused to know the mankind, has been caused to understand them by means of Me (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Now after Me; for you is only – anguish of the world and the General Resurrection. And there is nothing between you and these. I explain before you that Allah Almighty has commanded: I have sent source of your eternal life care of My last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). There is no worthy of worship save Me. Therefore, you should keep your duty unto Me.
