Commentary

If Joseph (peace be upon him) were irascible like His brothers, He would have beaten them unmannerly. At that time, He (peace be upon him) was performing as a ruler and was able to get them punished in accordance with own will. But His foresight and patience worked here also as usual. Beholding this, His brothers began to flatter and said: in fact; his (Binyamin’s) father is very aged and weak. So kindly! Take any one of us instead of him and let him go.

Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) said: Allah Almighty protect Me from such injustice. How can I arrest lawfully any other than he, from whom the stolen property has been recovered? If I did so, I would be counted in wrongdoers, and breaking of law would be written in My name.

Commentary

‘Asarra-haa – {(he) kept it (this theft) secret}, ‘asarra is a past tense, from the word ‘israar, which has come out from the word sirr. Sirr means “a secret”. ‘Israar means “to hide”. Haa indicates unto saraqah.

They said: his theft is a fault of him by birth. His brother had been suffering from the same fault. From this answer, it is clear that in their hearts, the same insanity has been surging that “we are better than these two little brothers”. Under the pressure of the same madness, they arranged to remove away Joseph from the sight of Jacob (peace be upon them). And due to hidden affect of the same insanity, they were talking so, the result of which would assuredly come out in the form of remoteness of Binyamin from his Father.

Joseph (peace be upon him) considered that reply of such unreasonable saying was not necessary. He (peace be upon him) did say them nothing, but kept it secret in his soul and said within himself that for which theft they were blaming Binyamin, that was not at all a theft. Like this, for which theft they were censuring Joseph (peace be upon him), was also only a lie. They themselves were criminals more than it.

They deceived their father, misbehaved painfully with their brother (Joseph - peace be upon him). They stole Him from His Father (peace be upon him) and sold. Now they were ensnaring the second brother unknowingly. Allah Almighty was Aware best the truth of that which they alleged.

Commentary

Suitableness was in it that at first, the bags of brothers were required to be touched, so that there should be no any kind of doubt that this happening belongs particularly to Binyamin. As soon as they opened his saddlebag, the cup had been recovered. It is not difficult to understand; which condition of his brothers would have been at that time.

Then, it is commanded: Over every lord of knowledge there is one more Knowing “Allah, The Most High”. We taught this scheme to Joseph (peace be upon him) which was good and proper for the time being according to Our Knowledge. If He (peace be upon him) did not have done so, then it would not be possible for Him to keep His brother (Binyamin) with Him. And there were many philosophies hidden in keeping Binyamin in Egypt, for instance, one more opportunity of warning the brothers. Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) should experience one more shock so that He may get reward of patience one again, and then, all of them should meet one another, and the brothers should be ashamed by remembering these circumstances and their misconduct.

Commentary

When the people of the caravan heard that drinking-cup of the King has been lost, they said being thunderstruck: We swear that we have not come here with the intention of molesting your people or stealing your goods. We are not thieves. Hearing this, the regal servants said: Tell us! What will be penalty of that person of you; from whose saddlebag; the king’s cup is found?

According to Israelite religious law, prescribed penalty of a thief, when it was proved that he was a thief, was that the person, who’s any thing was stolen, was authorized to keep the thief as a slave with him for one year and he should serve him, otherwise, this punishment of the thief did not exist in the Egyptian Law.

Brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) were sure that there was none of them a thief. Therefore, they explained about the thief’s penalty unhesitatingly: From whose bag of us, the stolen cup is recovered, he, as requital, will be slave of the owner of the stolen thing. And in addition, they said also: According to our law, it is the punishment of those who steal or violate. Therefore due to the reason of their admission, they were caught themselves.

71.  They asked, coming toward them: What is it ye have lost?

Commentary

Suwaa-‘a – (a goblet, drinking vessel without handle), this word has come out from Saaa’, which is name of a measure (nearly less than 450 gram). Any thing which is contained equal to that measure is called a Saaa’.

Za-‘iim – (answerable), it is an adjective from the word za-‘ama, it means “to accept responsibility”.

When brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) heard this voice, they turned unto the servants and said: which thing have you lost? Government servants answered them: A precious drinking-cup has been lost from the things of regal palace. The person, who will tell about it, will be given extra grain equal to the weight of a camel-load. Joseph (peace be upon him) said: It is my responsibility to put in possession of him this reward.

Joseph (peace be upon him) was aware that the lost drinking-cup would be discovered from the provisions of Binyamin, and according to the Divine Law of Israelite religion, punishment of a thief was that the owner of the theft thing was authorized to keep the thief as a slave of him for one year. With this trick, Binyamin would be able to live with his Brother lawfully.

Allah Almighty put in Joseph’s mind this plan of keeping His brother with Him (peace be upon him). Apparently Joseph (peace be upon him) was provided this opportunity from the circumstances that His those brothers, who troubled Him, should attend His court on that day for liability of the accusation of theft, and as they could not fulfill their covenant of His safety with their father, like it, their treaty about the safety of Binyamin should not be fulfilled, and after that they should feel bashfulness and they repent.

Commentary

It appears from these verses that the mankind considers that outward circumstances of the matters and his own efforts would be cause of good result. But in fact, behind the screen, Desire of Allah Almighty works, which (result) can also be out, sometimes, against the apparent circumstances and own efforts.

Which circumstances passed upon Joseph (peace be upon him), apparently those were very troublesome, but their result was going to finalize in accordance with exaltation and well being of Joseph (peace be upon him), and inferiority of those who troubled Him (peace be upon him).

He (peace be upon him) kept Binyamin (His brother); particularly along with Him and disclosed the secret before him: I am your brother. You should not be grieved on the behavior which our elder brothers adopted with us. Then He (peace be upon him) planed; not to send His brother back at home, that silently, He put His drinking-cup in the luggage (camel-load) of His brother’s portion. The guards of His house’s goods found that a drinking-cup was missing. They were in doubt that the people of caravan were thieves. Therefore they ran behind them and said: Stop! You are thieves.
