Morning (Fajr) Prayer

Surah Baniii ‘Israaa-‘iil (The Children of Israel) – 17

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِدُلُوكِ ٱلشَّمْسِ إِلَىٰ غَسَقِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَقُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ إِنَّ قُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا 78

 وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِۦ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا 79

78.  Establish worship at the going down of the sun until the dark of night, and (the recital of) the Qur’an at Dawn. Lo! (The recital of) the Qur’an at Dawn is ever witnessed. 79.  And pray Tahajjud during some part of the night, a largess for thee; it may be that thy Lord will raise thee to a praised estate.

78.  ‘Aqimis-Salaata  li-duluu-kish-shamsi  ‘ilaa  gasaqil-layli  wa  Qur-‘aanal-Fajr.  ‘Inna  Qur-‘aanal-Fajri  kaana  mash-huudaa. 79.  Wa  minal-layli  fatahajjad  bihii  naafilatal-lak.  ‘Asaaa  ‘any-yab-‘asaka  Rabbuka  Maqaamam-Mahmuudaa.

       

Commentary

Duluuk – (setting of the sun, declining), origin of this word is dalak, which means “to bow, to decline or incline”. It aims “the time when the sun begins to set after 12.00 am”, because at that time; the day begins to decline.

Qur-‘aan – (The Thing which is required to be recited), It is name of a Book, which was revealed by Allah Almighty upon His last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). However, here; it aims “the prayer of Fajr (before rising of the sun)”, because reading Qur’an is incumbent in the prayer. Recital of the Qur’an is as though it is; offering the prayer.

Mash-huudan – (has been witnessed, the seers are present to see the thing; which is required to be seen). This word is an Object from sha-ha-da. Shahuud means “to be present”. Shaahid means “A Witness”. Mash-huud means “proved, attested, the thing which has been witnessed”. Here, it aims “the Angels (peace be upon them) are present to witness”.

Tahajjad – (Awake! Stand up!), it is a word of command from tahajjadun, which means “to awake after sleep and offering prayer at night’. Origin of this word is ha-ja-da. Hajuud means “to sleep”.

Naafilatan – (largess), it is the Subject from the word nafala. Naflu means “to be more than requirement”. Naafilatan is the thing which is extra than essential.

Maqaamam-Mahmuud – (a Praised Estate, approved rank), it aims “the rank of a Man who has been permitted to intercede broadly in the Hereafter”. This Intercession will be by Muhammad; the last Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) only for the entire human beings in the Field of Judgment, on the Judgment Day.

From this verse, it is found that Prayer - Five times a day has been prescribed for all Muslims, and recital of the Qur’an in the Fajr (Morning) Prayer should be long. It seems also that Tahajjad Prayer was prescribed only for the last Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) because a great grade will be given to Him on the Day of Judgment.

وَإِن كَادُوا۟ لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ مِنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيُخْرِجُوكَ مِنْهَا وَإِذًا لَّا يَلْبَثُونَ خِلَٰفَكَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا 76

  سُنَّةَ مَن قَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَمِن رُّسُلِنَا وَلَا تَجِدُ لِسُنَّتِنَا تَحْوِيلًا 77

76.  And they indeed wished to scare thee from the land that they might drive thee forth from thence, and then they would have stayed (there) but a little after thee. 77.  (Such was Our) Practice in the case of those whom We sent before thee (to mankind), and thou wilt not find any shifting in Our Practice.

76.  Wa  ‘in  kaaduu  la-yasta-fiz-zuunaka  minal- ‘arzi  li-yukhri-juuka  minhaa  wa  ‘izal-laa  yal-basuuna  khilaafaka  ‘illaa  qa-liilaa. 77.  Sunnata  man-  qad  ‘arsal-Naa  qablaka  mir-rusuli-Naa  wa  laa  tajidu  li-SunnatiNaa  tah-wiilaa (Sction 8).

       

Commentary

Yasta-fiz-zuuna – {they (wish to) scare}, this word is from ‘istafzaaz, which means “to scare, to terrify suddenly, to frighten”.

Khilaafa – (behind, after), this word has passed in Surah Tawbah.

It is commanded: The people of Makkah wish to confuse you as much that you should be driven away from Makkah being embarrassed. But they should bear in mind that after exiling You {O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)} from Makkah, they also will not live more days satisfied. They will dwell here only for a few days, then they will be expelled for ever from here. The same established order was kept up in the matters of previous Prophets (peace be upon them) that whenever any folk troubled her Messenger (peace be upon him) and made the dwelling of the Prophet difficult in the township; then after that; they too could not live there and were ruined. Hear it carefully that when We bring a rule in operation, then it can never be changed. Due to which wickedness; the ancient people were punished, if the same villainy appears in the world again; then the same punishment will also be given to the existing people. The doom can be delayed, however certainly it shall come sooner or later.

It is found from this verse that prescribed laws of Allah Almighty work properly always. Due to which reasons; any result has been regulated in the past, if the same circumstances are produced again, then again the same result will surely come out. The Scientists have discovered this Established Order and confused the people of the world. But whatever was required to be learnt, we did not learn.

Surah Baniii ‘Israaa-‘iil (The Children of Israel) – 17

وَلَوْلَآ أَن ثَبَّتْنَٰكَ لَقَدْ كِدتَّ تَرْكَنُ إِلَيْهِمْ شَيْـًٔا قَلِيلًا 74

 إِذًا لَّأَذَقْنَٰكَ ضِعْفَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ وَضِعْفَ ٱلْمَمَاتِ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُلَكَ عَلَيْنَا نَصِيرًا 75

74.  And if We had not made thee wholly firm thou mightest almost have inclined unto them a little. 75.  Then had We made thee taste a double (punishment) of living and a double (punishment) of dying, then hadst thou found no helper against Us.

74.  Wa  law-laaa  ‘an-  sabbat-Naaka  laqad  kit-ta  tarkanu  ‘ilayhim  shay-‘an-  qaliilaa. 75.  ‘Izalla-‘azaqNaaka  zi’-fal-hayaati  wa  zi’-fal-mamaati  summa  laa  tajidu  laka  ‘alayNaa  nasiiraa.

       

Commentary

Tarkanu – (you had inclined), this word has been derived from rakan, origin of which is rukuun. Rukuun means “to incline a little”.

Zi’-fa – (double), we can understand easily from the sentence that here it aims “a double punishment”.

Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was naturally gentle and tolerant. Burden bearing and hospitality for others was His natural habit. But He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was unaware of ambition and greed. So when the Idolaters enticed Him of worldly wealth, treasures and luxuries, He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) did not care. As His habit of taking everything of the world normal was surprising for His enemies at that time, even today; the same habit has been producing fear and awe in the hearts of the people of the entire world along with astonishment.

But because of His natural civility, perhaps He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) could imagine lightly for removing disputes that “if by showing some favor; enmity of those people can be lessened; then probably those people become ready to hear the Truth”.  

Allah Almighty commanded for any such occasion: We have sent You for saving the mankind from evil matters of the world. Your grade is as much higher that You can never think to fall short in describing the Truth for the sake of any individual. If You had inclined unto them a little, then We had made You taste a double punishment – in the world; as well as in the Hereafter (God protect), and there would be no helper of You to save from the punishment. However, it was good that We made You wholly firm at your place by Our Power and no commotion happened in Your determination and intension.

وَإِن كَادُوا۟ لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ لِتَفْتَرِىَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُۥوَإِذًا لَّٱتَّخَذُوكَ خَلِيلًا 73

73.  And they indeed strove hard to beguile thee (O Muhammad) away from that wherewith We have inspired thee; that thou shouldst forge other than it against Us, and then would they have accepted thee as a friend.

73.  Wa  ‘in  kaaduu  la-yaftinuu-naka  ‘anillaziii  ‘awhayNaaa  ‘ilayka  li-taftariya  ‘alayNaa  gayrah;  wa  ‘izal-lattakhazuu-ka  khaliilaa.

       

Commentary

‘In – (indeed), actually this word is ‘inna, noun of which is hum. So it would become ‘innahum, which will be meant “indeed they”.

Yaftinuuna – (they beguile), it is the aorist tense from fatana, (gram – the name of certain tenses in the Greek verb expressing indefinite time), from which a famous word fitnah has been derived. Origin of this word is fatnun and futuunun, which mean “to examine, to misguide, to include other similar things with one thing; so that it may be difficult to explore the original thing, or trying to repel from the actual matter”. Fitnah is the condition or thing which allures in any trial. Here, the aim from the word yaftinuu-naka is that they produce before you such matters, by which you may be pushed back from the actual matter (Let us flee to God).

Maximum people used to say, by showing themselves serious, to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): That; whatsoever is inspired unto You, therein should be some such commandments, from which; the value of our traditions and customs is also disclosed and the honor of our idols is come out. If it can be so then we both can compromise with one another at the spot.

They used to say: You should change some commandments of Holy Qur’an or give them up, then there is no dispute among both of us. Moreover, if you do so, then we are ready to obey You, and for it; whatever will You say; we shall provide you immediately – whether that is money, beautiful women, dignity, wealth or property, every that thing is present what you wish. You have to do only that such portion of Holy Qur’an should be deleted in which idol-worshipping has been rejected and polytheism has been mentioned as an evil.

It has been commanded in the verse: If really You (supposed impossible) do as they say then they will become your best friends without any delay, but it is obvious that if the reformers will begin to compromise with the evil-livers then the world can never be corrected.

                  يَوْمَ نَدْعُوا۟ كُلَّ أُنَاسٍۭ بِإِمَٰمِهِمْ فَمَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ يَقْرَءُونَ كِتَٰبَهُمْ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَفَتِيلًا 71

  وَمَن كَانَ فِى هَٰذِهِۦٓ أَعْمَىٰ فَهُوَ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ أَعْمَىٰ وَأَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا 72 

71.  On the Day when We shall summon all men with their leaders then whoso is given his book in his right hand – such will read their book and they will not be wronged a shred. 72.  And whoso is blind here; will be blind in the Hereafter, and are far astray from the Path.

71.  Yawma  Nad-‘uu  kulla  ‘unaasim-  bi-‘Imaamihim.  Fa-man  ‘uutiya  kitaabahuu  bi-ya-miinihii  fa-‘ulaaa-‘ika  yaqra-‘uuna  kitaaba-hum  wa  laa  yuzlamuuna  fatiilaa. 72.  Wa  man-  kaana  fii  haazi-hiii  ‘a’-maa  fa-huwa  fil- ‘Aakhirati  ‘a’-maa  wa  ‘azallu  Sabiilaa.

       

Commentary

Fatiilan – (a shred), origin of this word is fatala, which means “to twist”. By twisting the cotton etc. thread is prepared. Like the same, a very thin skin is found in the middle of the date-stone. These both are called fatiil.

‘Imaamun – (leader, guide, the head of a party), it aims every that thing, faith, imaginations, matters or habits, of which a mankind becomes slave.

‘Unaasun – (tribes, sects, classes etc.), this word is plural of ‘insun, which is name of the entire mankind. Purpose of using this word as plural is that all classes of the human beings become manifest.

It is commanded in this verse: We shall pass an order to every mankind on the Day of Resurrection that he/she should be present before Us. Then Conduct Sheet (Record of worldly deeds) of every individual will be handed over to them. To whom this Book is given in right hand, will read it happily and will be rewarded because of own good deeds. No one of them will be wronged even equal to a shred.

But the person, who would have chosen devilish thoughts and committed wicked deeds, will be disgraced on the Day of Resurrection. As nothing good was visible to them during the life of this world, on that Day also, they will not be able to see any thing save the darkness of despair and misfortune. And they will be far astray from ease and peace after death.

Surah Baniii ‘Israaa-‘iil (The Children of Israel) – 17

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِىٓ ءَادَمَ وَحَمَلْنَٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ وَرَزَقْنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَٰتِوَفَضَّلْنَٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِيلًا 70 

70.  And verily We have honoured the Children of Adam, We carried them on the land and the sea, and have made provision of good things for them, and have preferred them above many of those whom We created with a marked preferment.

70.  Wa  laqad  karramNaa  Baniii  ‘Aadama  wa  hamalNaa-hum  fil-barri  wal-bahri  wa  razaqNaa-hum-minat-tayyibaati  wa  fazzalNaa-hum  ‘alaa  kasiirim-mimman  khalaqNaa  tafziilaa. (Section 7)

       

Commentary

The mankind should know his grade and should not commit any such work; by which he is dishonored. Allah Almighty described the story of the birth of Adam (peace be upon him) in Holy Qur’an again and again, and from it, He drew attention of human being unto the matter; summary of which has been placed in this verse.

It is commanded: We honored the mankind by giving him sense and guidance. As many arrangements have been managed for his guidance; so much has not been arranged for any other creature. We have set management at large scale to fulfill his worldly requirements. On the entire face of the earth, he can move by means of carriages and ships, and which lawful things We have produced in the world for him, he can get in accordance with personal requirement.

We have saved him from perplexity for the purpose that he should not waste his entire precious time due to being involved in fulfillment of his requirements. With this intention, We have provided such means, by which he can acquire very higher grade than other many creatures.

The mankind should esteem the Bounties of Allah Almighty and try to get his rank promoted more and more by acting upon His Commands, and should not produce himself; without any cause; complications for acquiring provision. If he escaped from greediness and lust, then with less labor; every individual can be provided easily according to requirement. If intricacies are produced into it, then he will forfeit himself from many Favors of God Almighty.

أَمْ أَمِنتُمْ أَن يُعِيدَكُمْ فِيهِ تَارَةً أُخْرَىٰ فَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ قَاصِفًا مِّنَٱلرِّيحِ فَيُغْرِقَكُم بِمَا كَفَرْتُمْ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوا۟ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا بِهِۦ تَبِيعًا 69 

69.  Or feel ye secure that He will not return you to that (plight) a second time, and send against you a hurricane of wind and drown you for your thanklessness, and then ye will not find therein that ye have any avenger against Us?

69.  ‘Am-‘amintum  ‘anyYu-‘ii-dakum  fiihi  taaratan  ‘ukhraa  fa-yursila  ‘alaykum  qaasifam-minar-riihi  fa-yug-riqakum  bi-maa  kafartum,  summa  laa  taji-duu  lakum  ‘alayNaa  bihii  tabii-‘aa.

       

Commentary

Qaasifun – (a hurricane), origin of this word is qasafa, which means “to up-root, to disjoin, to pull out”. Qaasif means “a violent storm of wind which draws over the trees and destroys the dwellings.

Tabii-‘un – (interrogator, avenger), this word has come out from taba-‘a, which means “to follow, to pursue”. Tabii-‘un means “the person who calls to account and teases”.

It is commanded: Woe is me that they did not guess correctly the Power of Allah Almighty. They did not understand that if He desire, He can cause a slope of the dry land to engulf them in retaliation of their thanklessness. If He can drown the mankind in the water by bringing a storm, then He can absorb the human being also in the dry land by bringing a jerk of earthquake, or He can produce any such necessary reason that you are compelled to ride on the ship again and move unto any other place, and He send any blow of wind’s hurricane, which may up-root the trees and destroy the dwellings, and drown your ship by upsetting it as exchange of your thanklessness and ungratefulness.

Remember it that there is no one who may inquire from Him. If; as a punishment of your wicked deeds, either He push you in the dry land or compel you for journey of the sea, and there; by sending a blow of fast wind; He drown you along with your luggage, then there is none who may claim against Allah Almighty, and by pursuing this case; he may ask from Him. There is no other way for the human beings save it that they should seek shelter of Allah Almighty for saving themselves from every trouble. Wherever you are, whether on the water or on the dry land, you should beg from Him Who is Merciful and Doer of all works that: Our Lord! Save us from all misfortunes by Your Grace and relieve us from distress with Your Mercy. There is no power except Allah Almighty who may save us from Satan and storms or disasters etc. whether those are the Devil, his disciples or self-invented gods.
