Cords and staves of the wizards

Chapter TAA-HAA – 20

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

     قَالُوا۟ يَٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِمَّآ أَن تُلْقِىَ وَإِمَّآ أَن نَّكُونَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ أَلْقَىٰ 65

 قَالَ بَلْ أَلْقُوا۟فَإِذَا حِبَالُهُمْ وَعِصِيُّهُمْ يُخَيَّلُ إِلَيْهِ مِن سِحْرِهِمْ أَنَّهَا تَسْعَىٰ 66

65.  They said: O Moses! Either throw first, or let us be the first to throw?

66.  He said: Nay, do ye throw! Then lo! Their cords and their staves, by their magic, appeared to him as though they ran.
65.  Qaaluu  yaa-Muusaaa  ‘im-maaa  ‘an-  tulqiya  wa  ‘immaaa  ‘an-nakuuna  ‘awwala  man  ‘alqaa.

66.  Qaala  bal  ‘alquu.  Fa-‘izaa  hibaalahum  wa  ‘isiyyuhum  yukhayyalu  ‘ilayhi  min-  sihrihim  ‘annahaa  tas-‘aa.

Commentary

‘Isiyyuhum  - (their staves, sticks, cudgels etc.), this word is plural of ‘asaa, which means “a staff”. Actually it was ‘usuu-yun, but after changing of vowels, it became ‘isiyyun. Origin of this word is ‘a-sa-wa.

Yukhayyalu – (appeared to him, caused to imagine him), it has been derived from takh-yiil, which has come out from the word khiaal. Takh-yiil means “to make imaginary form, to produce anything in thought”.

When Pharaoh encouraged the wizards, they pressed forth, because they had found that “Moses (peace be upon him) throws his staff, which becomes a serpent, gliding”. So they brought also cords and staves along with them for defeating Moses (peace be upon him). They said: O Moses (peace be upon him)! Will you throw first or we should be the first to throw? Moses (peace be upon him) replied carelessly: Nay, you should throw first!

Then, when they threw their cords and staves on the ground, Moses (peace be upon him) considered that the earth had been filled with serpents and those had been running here and there. But it was a game of vision’s confinement only, actually there was no serpent etc. The wizards had strengthened their thoughts by practice to overcome for awhile upon others.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

62.  Then they debated one with another what they must do, and they kept their counsel secret.

63.  They said: Lo! These are two wizards who would drive you out from your country by their magic, and destroy your best traditions;

64.  So arrange your plan, then come in battle line. And whoso is uppermost this day will be indeed successful.
62.  Fatanaaza-‘uu  ‘amrahum-  baynahum  wa  ‘asarrun-najwaa.

63.  Qaaluuu  ‘in  haazaani  la-saahiraani  yuriidaani  ‘any-yukh-rijaakum  -min  ‘arzikum-  bi-sihrihimaa  wa  yaz-habaa  bi-tariiqati-kumul-muslaa.

64.  Fa-‘ajmi-‘uu  kaydakum  summa’-tuu  safaa.  Wa  qad  ‘afla-hal-yawma  manista’-laa.

Commentary

‘In – (Lo, in fact, authentically), here; this word is abbreviation of ‘inna.

‘Al-muslaa – it is feminine of ‘amsala, which has come out from the word misl. Misl means “an example, a pattern, a specimen”. ‘Amsalu and muslaa means “the thing which can be “a sample”, that is to say “the best”.

After hearing the advice from Moses (peace be upon him), the people of Pharaoh began to oppose one another. Some people said: he is a wizard, others said: wizards cannot be like him. After all, they consulted privately, were compelled to admit the opinion of Pharaoh and decided that “certainly they {Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them)} are wizards. And they wish to become king after driving you out. And they desire to establish their new plan after removing your way of life, which is best of all. The only opportunity which you have, is that you should arrange at your own, collect entire juggleries, tricks and devices, and assault altogether against him (peace be upon him). Today’s fight is very severe. He will prosper who will overcome.

It seems that the wizards obeyed the command of Pharaoh, but heartily they understood that “He (peace be upon him) was not a sorcerer but a Man of very high grade. And that is true whatsoever he says. There is speciousness in his sayings”.

59.  (Moses) said: Your tryst shall be the day of the feast, and let the people assemble when the sun hath risen high.

60.  Then Pharaoh went and gathered his strength, then came (to the appointed tryst).

61.  Moses said unto them: Woe unto you! Forge not a lie against Allah, lest He extirpate you by some punishment. And he who lieth faileth miserably.

Commentary

Yaw-muz-ziinati – (the day of the feast), it aims “their festival of nawroz (the New Year’s Day), which was their greatest feast.

Yus-hitu – (extirpate, destroy, root out), this word has been derived from ‘is-haat, origin of which is suht. Suht means “ruin, destruction”. ‘Is-haat means “to destroy, to extirpate”.

Messenger Moses (peace be upon him) was aware that Pharaoh (the ignorant) can do nothing against Allaah Almighty. He (peace be upon him) replied at opportune: Your greatest festival of Nawroz (the New Year’s Day) is coming soon. On that day, in the morning when the sun will have been risen high, that time will be of your tryst.

After hearing this; Pharaoh left the council, went away and began to get ready for the competition. He ordered to collect the entire magicians of the country, and then reached the place of competition at fixed time along with them. They left no stone unturned in preparation from their side.

Moses (peace be upon him) addressed the assemblage and said: Behold! Do not consider that Commandments of Allaah Almighty are a lie. Going against His Commandments is just like accusing Him of a lie that lest as its punishment; He extirpate you by sending any disaster. The person who considers that Commandments of Allaah Almighty are a lie (Let us flee to Allaah), consequently he fails and is punished.

Suwan – (convenient, plain, open), actually this word is suwa-yun.

Allaah Almighty commands: We did show Pharaoh all kinds of Portents like natural scenes of the world and the miracles of Moses (peace be upon him), but he considered all of them amusement and sport, and he denied from obeying Our Commandment. He said: You wish to turn the people from us and unto yourself; by showing them these conjurations, so that after driving us out; you may become a king. Good! Stop! We too shall bring to you magic as you showed. You should appoint a tryst between us and you for a certain time and a certain open field, a competition will be arranged among both of us before all the people.

Amorous people of authority and wealth; do not understand that there can be any other supreme object also except excessive demand of worldly things.

Commentary

‘Azwaajun – (various kinds, diverse), this word is plural of zawj, which means “a couple, a pair, a husband). It is used for “kind” also.

Shattaa – (different), it is plural of shatiitun, origin of which is shattun. Shattun means “to be scattered”. Shatiitun means “scattered, separately”.

Nuhaa – (thoughts, senses), it is plural of nuh-yatun, which means “understanding”.

Taaratan – (term, turn, time), origin of this word is taarun which means “to delay”. Taaratan means “after stay, occasionally, at times”.

It is not difficult for the mankind to believe in Allaah Almighty and accept that He is his Lord. A simple person who has some sense; will understand easily after meditating that “Who created these entire things and Who gave power to the human being to take work from them?” Moses (peace be upon him) has been saying to Pharaoh: These all things have been created by Allaah Almighty. He appointed the earth as a floor, made paths for proceeding here and there, then He caused to rain water from the sky and by means of it; He produced grains and vegetables of diverse kinds from the earth.

Allaah Almighty commands: These all things have been created by Us for the purpose of your food and the food for your cattle; by the help of which you till. There are Tokens for intelligent people in these matters; by thinking into which they can know their Lord. Remember it that We created you from the earth, and thereunto We shall return you, and thence We shall bring you forth a second time.

Commentary

Quruun – (the generations), this word is plural of qarnun, which means “a long period of nearly 100 to 120 years”. Here it aims “the people who used to live during ancient times”.

Pharaoh heard from Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them). Sayings were clear. There was no reason of denying. At such times, the people; who do not believe in Allaah Almighty; seek pretences of disbelieving. Pharaoh also did the same. He said: Many people came in this world before us and died. What did happen with them and what was spoiled of them who disbelieved in your Lord?

Moses (peace be upon him) said: Mind your own business. Allaah Almighty is Aware of their entire circumstances. Everything has been recorded and saved with Him. Neither Allaah Almighty errs and nor forgets. Talk about yourself! Do you have faith that Allaah Almighty is The Lord or otherwise? Behold! He has appointed the earth like a spacious bed for you and entire living beings, so that they may move hither and thither, sit and stand comfortably. Moreover, He made paths for going to and coming from everywhere, by means of which; after crossing the mountains, rives, abysses and seas etc, one can go wherever he desires and gain one’s end.

48.  Lo! It hath been revealed unto us that the doom will be for him who denieth and turneth away.

50.  Qaala  Rabbunallaziii  ‘a’-taa  kulla  shay-‘in  khalqahuu  summa  hadaa.

Commentary

Khalqa – (form, shape, invention), it means “to make little things of different forms by cutting and pruning a big thing”. Form of every thing is also called “khalqa”.

It is commanded: you should say also that “we have been informed by inspiration that the person who disobeyed our saying and turned away from us, for him is punishment, pain and suffering”.

Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them) went unto Pharaoh along with this Message and described him these all matters. These were such commandments that every wise person who will hear; will accept. But Pharaoh’s insanity was that the people should consider him only their great and lord. He said to Moses (peace be upon him): About Whom you say that He is your Lord, Who has sent to you unto me? I only, I am a lord (God forbid) because I have full power over all. I give all things to the obedient and punish severely to the disobedient. Moses (peace be upon him) replied: our Lord is He Who gave unto everything its natural, suitable form, shape and sense separately. Then He gave knowledge to every living being that how the useful things should be gotten and how should those be used. He taught them way of living, eating and drinking.
