Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim. 
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

فَإِن لَّمْ تَأْتُونِى بِهِۦ فَلَا كَيْلَ لَكُمْ عِندِى وَلَا تَقْرَبُونِ (60

  قَالُوا۟ سَنُرَٰوِدُعَنْهُ أَبَاهُ وَإِنَّا لَفَٰعِلُونَ (61

60.  And if ye bring him not unto me, then there shall be no measure for you with me, nor shall ye draw near. 61.  They said: We will try to win him from his father; that we will surely do.

60.  Fa-‘illam  ta’-tuunii  bihii  falaa  Kayla  lakum  ‘indii  wa  laa  taqra-buun. 61.  Qaaluu  sanu-raawidu  ‘anhu  ‘abaahu  wa  ‘innaa  lafaa-‘iluun.

   

Commentary

Falaa  Kayla – (then no measure), here it aims “the grain”, which is given duly weighed by a measure. It means: You will not be provided any measure of grain from here.  

Joseph (peace be upon him) was not still in favor of manifesting Himself. He (peace be upon him) is aware of all circumstances in fact, but He has been talking with His brothers as though, about them, He knows only that which they have been describing. Therefore, when they demanded the portion of corn for Binyamin, then He (peace be upon him) said to them: Bring Him with you next time when you come again. We shall treat him good also as we treated you.

It has been explained in this verse that Joseph (peace be upon him) warned them too: If you did not bring your brother then it will be considered that by telling a lie, you wished to get one extra camel loaded with corn. If you are true, then for proof; you should bring him, otherwise you are liars. In such condition, you are not allowed to draw near Me (peace be upon him), because I dislike the deceivers. If you will come back without him, your journey to Egypt will be useless, because I shall not give you even one seed of grain.  

After hearing this from Joseph (peace be upon him), they would have been certainly confounded, because they were well aware about that which they committed in the matter of Joseph (peace be upon him). How would have their Father {Jacob - (peace be upon him)} trust in them for Binyamin? They had been entangled in a difficulty that if they did not bring Binyamin, it would be considered that they were telling a lie. And if they wished to bring him, how could they bring (Binyamin from father)?

At last they could say nothing but that: We shall flatter our father and as it might be possible, we shall excite him to send Binyamin with us.

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

 وَجَآءَ إِخْوَةُ يُوسُفَ فَدَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَعَرَفَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ (58

  وَلَمَّا جَهَّزَهُم بِجَهَازِهِمْ قَالَ ٱئْتُونِى بِأَخٍلَّكُم مِّنْ أَبِيكُمْ أَلَا تَرَوْنَ أَنِّىٓ أُوفِى ٱلْكَيْلَ وَأَنَا۠ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ (59

58.  And Joseph’s brethren came and presented themselves before him, then he recognized them but they remained unaware of him. 59.  And when he provided them with their provision he said: Bring unto me a brother of yours from your father. See ye not that I fill up the measure and I am the best of hosts?

58.  Wa  jaaa-‘a  ‘ikhwatun  Yuu-sufa  fadakhaluu  ‘alayhi  fa-‘arafahum  wa  hum  lahuu  mun-kiruun. 59.  Wa  lammaa  jahha-zahum-  bi-jahaa-zihim  qaala’-tuunii  bi-‘akhil-lakum-min  ‘abiikum.  ‘Alaa  tarawna  ‘anniii  ‘uufil-kayla  wa  ‘anaa  khay-rul-munzi-liin.

   

Commentary

Joseph (peace be upon him) deposited grain in storehouses for seven years and then began to distribute with planning during the famine. This news reached very distant that, in Egypt, every necessitous is provided corn more than enough. When brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) heard this news, they came to Egypt for purchasing grain also.

When they arrived before Joseph (peace be upon him), He recognized them immediately, but the brothers could not know Him (peace be upon him). Then probably, Joseph (peace be upon him) would have asked them about their address. He paid them full attention and at the time of their departure for their home town, He (peace be upon him) gave them grain with generosity. Possibly, they would have said: We have one more brother, who has not come with us in this journey.

They would have requested for the grain of his (the brother left behind at home) portion after explaining about their entire circumstances. Then Joseph (peace be upon him) said: Bring unto me your left over brother when you come again next time. He will also be treated like you, when he will come. You have observed that I do not decrease the measure and I am the best of hosts. Actually, Joseph (peace be upon him) desired to call His real brother named Binyamin unto Himself.

 وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَكَّنَّا لِيُوسُفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ يَتَبَوَّأُ مِنْهَا حَيْثُ يَشَآءُ نُصِيبُ بِرَحْمَتِنَا مَن نَّشَآءُ وَلَا نُضِيعُ أَجْرَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ (56

 وَلَأَجْرُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ خَيْرٌلِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ (57

56.  Thus gave We power to Joseph in the land. He was the owner of it, so that might settle therein where he wished. We bestow Our Mercy on whom We will and We lose not the reward of the good. 57.  And the reward of the Hereafter is better, for those who believe and ward off (evil).

56.  Wa  kazaalika  makkan-Naa  li-Yuusufa  fil-‘arz.  Yata-baw-wa-‘u  min-haa  haysu  yashaaa’.  Nusiibu  bi-Rah-mati-Naa  man-Nashaaa-‘u  wa  laa  Nuzii-‘u  ‘ajral-Muh-siniin. 57.  Wa  la-‘ajrul- ‘Aakhirati  khayrul-lillaziina  ‘aamanuu  wa  kaanuu  yattaquun.

   

Commentary

We have seen that how Joseph (peace be upon him) accepted to be a manger of the country’s treasury. Later, with the process of time, all ministries of the government were given under His control. It has been commanded in this verse that after causing Him to pass through these entire circumstances, Allah Almighty desired to appoint Him ruler of Egypt and by means of Him, the Children of Israel should be brought there and inhabit them in Egypt. Therefore, these all happenings were for the same purpose.

So, it was the result that at that time, Joseph (peace be upon him) had full power over the kingdom of Egypt. The actual king was for the mere name of a king. Every matter was being commanded by Joseph (peace be upon him) only.

Allah Almighty commands: We exalt the person with Our Mercy whom We will. Verily, We bestow reward of good deeds to every righteous. The individual who passes his life according to Our prescribed Law, is certainly bestowed with full remuneration. He lives prosperous in the world without any confusion. And which dignity any individual deserves, acquires it. Besides this, he will also be given good reward after death on the Day of Resurrection, because the entire Believers and Abstemious people will find the fruit of their good deeds there.

 وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱئْتُونِى بِهِۦٓأَسْتَخْلِصْهُ لِنَفْسِى فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُۥ قَالَ إِنَّكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ لَدَيْنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِينٌ (54

  قَالَ ٱجْعَلْنِى عَلَىٰ خَزَآئِنِ ٱلْأَرْضِ إِنِّى حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ (55

54.  And the king said: Bring him unto me that I may attach him to my person. Then when he had talked with him he said: Lo! Thou art today in our presence honourable and trusted. 55.  He said: Set me over the storehouses of the land. Lo! I am a skilled custodian.

54.  Wa  qaalal-maliku’-tuunii  bihiii  ‘astakh-lis-hu  linaf-sii.  Falammaa  kallamahuu  qaala  ‘innakal-yawma  laday-naa  makii-nun  ‘amiin. 55.  Qaalaj-‘alnii  ‘alaa  khazaaa-‘inil-‘arz.  ‘Innii  hafeezun  ‘aliim.

   

Commentary

‘Astakh-lis-hu – {I set him free (from all others)}, this word is from ‘istikhlaas, which has been derived from khaluus. Khaluus means “to be without adulteration”. ‘Istikhlaas means “to separate by detaching from entire other people”. It aims: I shall attach him to my person.

The king sent the messenger again and ordered: You should bring Joseph (peace be upon him) unto me. I shall keep Him in my service. No other will have any relation with Him (peace be upon him).

When Joseph (peace be upon him) met the king, he said: With effect from today, You are from our chosen persons. Joseph (peace be upon him) said: Appoint Me a Finance Minister of your country. I know well the matters relating to Revenue. And in the present situation, there is no more expert than Me who may manage the Revenue and preserve the food for forthcoming circumstances because for this purpose there is a dire need of an aware and honest person.

Joseph (peace be upon him) considered it a part of Trust and Honesty also that He should produce His services Himself for the welfare of the public. It is learnt from the discussion by Joseph (peace be upon him) that every individual can manifest his special ability for the benefit of the common people, but not for own advantage or personal pomp and show.

 وَمَآ أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِىٓ إِنَّ ٱلنَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌۢ بِٱلسُّوٓءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّىٓ إِنَّ رَبِّى غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ (53

53.  And I do not exculpate myself. Lo! The (man’s) self enjoineth unto evil, save that whereon my Lord hath mercy. Lo! My Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

53.  WA  MAAA  ‘UBARRI-‘U  NAFSII.  ‘Innan-nafsa  la-‘am-maaratum-  bis-suuu-‘i  ‘illaa  maa  rahima  Rabbii.  ‘Inna  Rabbii  Gafuurur-Rahiim.

   

Commentary

‘UBARRI-‘U – (I exculpate), this word is from tabri-‘atun, origin of which is bar-‘un. Bar-‘un means goodness and good health. Tabri-‘atun means “to clear from charge of fault or crime, to admit that the accused is faultless”.

‘Am-maaratun – (such stubborn, who enjoins unto evil), it is from the word ‘amar. ‘Amar means “Command”.

Chosen servants of God Almighty are not proud of being pious, but they consider that piety is by the Divine guidance. If they are saved from evil deeds, they do not give themselves airs that they are good, so they are superior to others.

It is known from the sayings of grand people: If someone glories in doing good works and after performing, he wishes that the people should respect him due to his good works and consider that he is a great and of good disposition, then his all virtues are wasted. It has been admitted in the Principles of the Religion that ostentation, wish of renown, hope of praise and behaving with boastfulness - eat up the good deed as the fire reduces the firewood to ashes.

Particular servants of Allah Almighty do neither see any reason of their praise in it that they are abstinent and nor they demand their superiority over others due to any such reason.

Joseph (peace be upon him) said: I do not exculpate myself. It was mercy and kindness of Allah Almighty upon me that I was saved from the great sin, otherwise inordinate appetite would have drowned me. Allah Almighty keeps sight of forgiveness and mercy upon His servants who are meek in temperament.

  قُلْنَ حَٰشَ لِلَّهِ مَا عَلِمْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنسُوٓءٍ قَالَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْـَٰٔنَ حَصْحَصَ ٱلْحَقُّ أَنَا۠ رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ (51  b)

 ذَٰلِكَ لِيَعْلَمَ أَنِّى لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَايَهْدِى كَيْدَ ٱلْخَآئِنِينَ (52

51b.  They answered: Allah Blameless! We know no evil of him. Said the wife of the ruler: Now the truth is out. I asked of him an evil act, and he is surely of the truthful. 52.  (Then Joseph said: I asked for) this, that he (my lord) may know that I betrayed him not in secret, and surely Allah does not allow the deceivers to succeed in their deception.

51b.  Qulna  Haasha  Lillaahi  maa  ‘alim-naa  ‘alayhi  min  suuu’.  Qaala-timra-‘atul-’Aziizil-‘aana  has-hasal-haqq.  ‘Anaa  raa-wattuhuu  ‘an-naf-sihii  wa  ‘innahuu  laminas-Saadiqiin. 52.  Zaalika  li-ya’-lama  ‘annii  lam  ‘akhun-hu  bil-gaybi  wa  ‘annAllaaha  laa  yahdii  kay-dal-khaaa-‘iniin.

   

Commentary

Before the king, those women who were present, were those entire including the wife of the ruler of Egypt, in front of whom, Joseph (peace be upon him) was brought up. Summary of the question was that: Did you find Joseph (peace be upon him) abstinent or saw him immoral. Those all women replied collectively and forthwith: By God! We did not find any evil into him. Then wife of the ruler said: At last the truth has become public. I accept in this houseful court of the king in my particular matter that Satan misled me that I should make me inclined to Joseph (peace be upon him). He is certainly truthful in the claim of His innocence.

In the prison, Joseph (peace be upon him) would have taken a sigh of satisfaction after hearing above mentioned conversation of the women. He caused to say by someone in the court: I did all this for the purpose that I may assure perfectly to my lord (the ruler of Egypt) that I did never committed any such work behind him at his home, by which he have his reputation sullied. Allah Almighty does not allow the deceivers to succeed in their deception.
