In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

114.  Jesus, son of Mary, said: O Allaah, Lord of us! Send down for us a Table Spread with Food from Heaven, that it may be a feast for us, for the first of us and for the last of us, and a sign from Thee. And give us sustenance, for indeed Thou art the Best of Sustainers.

115.  Allaah said: Lo! I shall send it down for you. And whoso disbelieveth of you afterward, him surely will I punish with a punishment wherewith I shall not punish any of (My) creatures.

Lesson

Maaa-‘idatan – (the Table Spread with Food), this word indicates toward the wish of the companions of Jesus (peace be upon Him), that the Table Spread with prepared Food should be sent down from Heaven by Allaah Almighty and they should be given everything without any struggle.

As per previous verse, when the disciples, who believed in Christ (peace be upon Him) said: We do not want to test Allaah Almighty, but we request only for His particular Kindness, so that we may be grateful to Him freely and engage in His worship whole heartily and obey His commands and Your truth may be quite evident upon us and we may see its sign clearly.

Then Jesus (peace be upon Him) supplicated: Our Lord! Only You are Able to fulfill and provide our all requirements. Kindly do not keep us necessitous of struggle in getting needful things but send down for us a Table Spread with Food from Heaven, that it may be a feast and pleasure for us, for the first of us and for the last of us, and an open sign of Your Kindness may come in our hands. You are the Best of the Sustainers for all of us and certainly the sustenance comes from You in each condition. You can change the method of providing the sustenance without any delay. Everything is Your Power. Neither anyone can be equal to You in providing food and sustenance, nor can act like You, whether someone is much liberal or wealthy.

It is clear that this supplication of Jesus (peace be upon Him) was for providing facility to the companions so that they may thank Allaah Almighty and obey His Commands whole the time.

As a reply to the supplication of Jesus (peace be upon Him), Allaah Almighty commanded: I shall send it down for you, but keep it in mind that whoso will disbelieve of you afterward, him surely will I punish with a punishment wherewith I shall not punish any of My creatures.

After this, there is no description in the Holy Qur’aan whether the Table Spread of Food was sent down or otherwise, because only those matters have been mentioned in the Holy Qur’aan, which have any guidance for the humankind. A very useful matter has been explained in the supplication of Jesus (peace be upon Him) and its reply, which needs special attention of the human being. It could not be decided till today that whether the Table Spread with Food was sent down or not. Some persons say: That was sent down but the people did not thank God. Those people were punished and that was stopped to be sent down. Some of them have opinion: The people frightened after listening the reply of the supplication of Jesus (peace be upon Him) and they took back their request.

We have been taught many useful matters in it. At first, if the Messengers (peace be upon Them) are helpless in front of Allaah Almighty, then what is the position of those friends (saints) of Allaah Almighty, who are called ‘Awliyaaa’. We should understand properly the difference between the Creator and the creature. The Messengers (peace be upon Them) and ‘Awliyaaa’ “saints” (may God be Kind upon them) all are servants of Allaah Almighty and He is The Ruler upon all of the creatures. The Servants can supplicate only. To accept or reject the supplication is in the Power of Allaah Almighty. The aim from it is to falsify the claim of the Christians that “Jesus (peace be upon Him) is son of God (May God Forbid). And we would have to learn from it that there is much difference between Allaah Almighty (God) and the servant. Besides this, there is another lesson to be learnt that the human being should earn the wealth by those ways, which have been determined lawful, and for this purpose everyone must do at least some labor. One should not try or wish to get sustenance, in a state of ease and comfort, by supplications and uncommon ways etc., because it is not easy to be thankful to Him and the end of being thankless is not other than His wrath. And the biggest wrath is that the mankind becomes proud, Satan or mere animal.
