Lesson # 762 From the Noble Quran

No compulsion in the religion

Surah ‘Al-‘An-‘aam (Cattle) – Chapter – 6)–Stage - 2

Verse –107b of 165, Section – 13 of 20 (Part - 7)

BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

We have not set Thee as a keeper over them, nor art Thou responsible for them.
Wa  maa  ja-‘alNaaKa  ‘alayhim  hafiizaa.  Wa  maaa  ‘anTa  ‘alayhim  bi-wakiil.

Lesson

It was revealed in the first part of this verse in the previous lesson, “Had Allah willed, they had not been idolaters”. It is understood from this discussion that the aim is not to make the people “Muslims” by force. The object is that the people should think deeply, form an opinion about their own profit and loss, and then, they should go on the way of Islam with their own choice and desire. It will be good for them in the both worlds (this life and the life in the Hereafter - after death).

While Allah Almighty does neither desire to save anyone from ascribing plurality to Him forcibly, and nor carries them on the way of Islam without their will, then it is clear that He has not sent His Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon Them) for the purpose that they would have to carry the people on the straight path by force. This method is useful for the donkeys only, not for the sensible life like human beings.

The straight path should be opened before him (mankind) and its absolute signs and tokens should be fixed, so that whose sense may recognize the straight path by observing these signs and get ready to go on that way, he may proceed. But that person, who does not wish to adopt that path, let him mind his own business.

Both kinds of people will get the fruit of their own deeds. They will achieve some part of that fruit in the life of this world and some – in the life after death. This very matter has been told to the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) in this verse.

It is commanded: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him)! We have not set You as a keeper over them that You watch them every time, and that let not anyone to go astray, and nor are You responsible for them. Your only duty is to explain Our Revelations in front of them and to establish the plan – how to act according to Them, and to guide those people, who desire to go on that path happily and willingly, which has been prescribed by You. You do not have any concern with those people, who have been drawn up in ascribing plurality to Allah, and do not listen to You.

We have not prescribed upon you O Messenger! That You would have to set up everyone violently, without their will on the monotheism and say them: You have to believe in oneness of Allah (God) and none should be ascribed equal to Him, and that person, who will believe in a plurality of Allah, will be punished. Islam is neither a police department, and nor are You any Police Officer and nor responsible for them that you stand near everyone holding a staff in hand, either hit his head with that stick, whosoever disobeys You, or put him into the prison, or punish him in any other way.

Therefore, neither You are a keeper over them and nor responsible. There is very clear command in this verse that “No compulsion in the religion”. So much wisdom and sense has been kept in the mankind by his Creator, with which every person can recognize well the way of good and bad, own profit and loss.
