BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

They ask thee of the (destined) Hour, when will it come to pass? Say: Knowledge thereof is with my Lord only. He Alone will manifest it at its proper time. It is heavy in the heavens and the earth. It cometh not to you save unawares. They question thee as if thou couldst be well informed thereof. Say: Knowledge thereof is with Allah only, but most of mankind know not.

Lesson

‘As-Saa-‘atu – (a very little part of the time, which is called “a Moment”). Here; it aims “the Time of general Resurrection”, when accounts of every human being will be taken.

Mur-saa – (destined, settlement, to be set up, taking place), this word has been derived from ‘arsaaa’, which means “to settle, to fix on”. And this word has been taken from raswun, which means “to stop, to stay, to remain and to last”. Mursaa and ‘arsaaa’ have the same meanings. Here; it aims “coming of the destined Hour to pass, the Time and the Day of Resurrection”.

Ha-fiyyun – (to be well informed, going to Endeavor), origin of this word is hafyun, which means “to turn the attention (to)”. Here it aims “one is going to seek about”.

The people were desirous to know about the destined Hour (the Time of Resurrection) that; when will it come to pass? It has been described about it already in the earlier Scriptures. Holy Qur’an caused to draw more attention upon it. The last Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) caused to hear by reciting the Holy Qur’an to the people. The people considered that He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) has reflected thoughtfully in this matter. Therefore, they asked from Him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him): Tell us! When the destined Hour will come to pass? They have been replied in this verse.

It is commanded that; coming of the Destined Hour (General Resurrection) to pass has been kept hidden.  Nobody knows about it save Allah Almighty. It is sufficient to say for correction of the people that it is sure that the Time and the Day of Resurrection shall come to pass. Moreover, there is a policy in keeping the destined Hour secret, which is; the people should remain frightened from It every time. When that Hour will come; Allah Almighty will show It to the entire people openly. It will be the heaviest accident among the heavens and the earth. No creature is able to bear Its knowledge. If the Time of Its happening is known by any creature, it will become difficult for them to perform their works. Whenever that Time will come, it will come suddenly and in the condition of unawares. The Messengers (peace be upon Them) do not try to know such matters, which are not described to Them by Allah Almighty Himself. Complete knowledge about it is with God Almighty only. Maximum people do not know that: What is the advisability in keeping that Hour secret?
