Commentary

‘Aa-sara – (preferred), it is a past tense from the word ‘iisaar, which has been derived from ‘asara. ‘Asara means “a badge, sign, token”. It aims “to signify someone by a token of own likeness, to prefer, to choose, to adopt”.

Tas-riiba – (reproof, reprimand), origin of this word is saraba, which means “to accuse, to defame, to speak ill of, to reproach”.

Brothers of Joseph (peace be upon them) were not able to say something to Him, and they bowed their heads before Joseph (peace be upon them) being ashamed, they accepted that they were blameworthy at fault and sinful. They swore and announced of their faith that Allah Almighty preferred him from them and made him rich with His rewards and dignities.

Joseph (peace be upon them) said: What was to happen, has happened. You should not fear now. Whatsoever was committed by you, that happened either due to your ignorance or on the ground of any powerful passion or complaint. My heart is clear from your side. I give you the same respect, which is required to be for elder brothers. Today, you will not be asked about previous matters. May Allah Almighty forgive you. He is the Most Merciful. There is none who may show mercy equal to Him.

Being impressive from the distress of brothers, Joseph (peace be upon them) did not say to them clearly that, “I forgive you”, because the little do not use to say to their elders so, but by saying that, “Have no fear this day!” He (peace be upon them) regarded and showed His politeness before them.
