God-fearing

Chapter Maryam (Mary) – 19

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

18.  She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee, if thou art God-fearing.

19.  He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may bestow on thee a pure son.

20.  She said: How can I have a son when no mortal hath touched me, neither have I been unchaste?
18.  Qaalat  ‘inniii  ‘a-‘uuzu  bir-Rahmaani  minka  ‘in-  kunta  taqiyyaa.

19.  Qaala  ‘innamaaa  ‘anaa  rasuulu  Rabbiki  li-‘ahaba  laki  gulaaman-  zakiyyaa.

20.  Qaalat  ‘annaa  yakuunu  lii  gulaamunw-wa  lam  yamsasnii  basharunw-wa  lam  ‘aku  bagiyyaa.

(Part One-Fourth)

Commentary

Bagiyyun – (unchaste), it is an adjective from the word bigyun, which means “to demand, to seek”. In idioms, it is used for “unchaste, an adulteress and sinful woman”.

Mary (peace be on her) said to him: From your form, it seems that you are undefiled and abstinent, but coming in unhesitatingly like this; is cause of doubt and wonderful. If you are sincere then certainly there would be fear of God Almighty in your heart. I am hopeful from His Mercy that He will save me from your evil.

In short, she (peace be on her) spoke as a chaste and God-fearing woman should speak at such occasion. The Angel (peace be on him) said: I am an Angel. Suspicion from me side is needless. Your Lord has sent me unto you and commanded that I should give you a pure son.

Mary (peace be on her) was satisfied from it that from the side of an Angel, there would be no such evil as she had been imagining. But after being fearless, she became brave and was very surprised that how a son could be born from her, whereas neither any husband she had and nor any contraband relationship she kept with any man.

 فَٱتَّخَذَتْ مِن دُونِهِمْ حِجَابًا فَأَرْسَلْنَآإِلَيْهَا رُوحَنَا فَتَمَثَّلَ لَهَا بَشَرًا سَوِيًّا 17

16.  And make mention of Mary in the Scripture. When she had withdrawn from her people to a chamber looking East-

17.  So she had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her Our Spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man.
16.  Wazkur  fil-Kitaabi  Maryam.  ‘Izin-tabazat  min  ‘ahlihaa  makaanan  Sharqiyyaa.

17.  Fattakhazat  min  duunihim  hijaabaa.  Fa-‘arsalNaaa  ‘ilay-haa  RuuhaNaa  fa-tamassala  lahaa  basharan-  sawiyyaa.

Commentary

‘In-tabazat – {(she) withdrew (from), was separated}, it is past tense from the word ‘intibaazun, which means “to be separated (from), to live alone”.

Ruuhun – (an Angel), it aims “the Angel named Gabriel (peace be upon him)” who performs important works assigned by Allah Almighty. The Angels (peace be upon them) do not have any kind of physical/sexual desire. So they are called “the Spirit”.

Sawiyyun – (perfect, complete), this word has passed earlier. Here it aims “whole, perfect and sound, without any deficiency”. The Angels meet with mankind in the same form i.e. as a perfect man.

Mention of Mary (peace be upon her) has passed before it in Surah ‘Aali ‘Imraan (Chapter “the Children of Imran”). Her work was naught but worship of Allah almighty only, because her mother had made a vow. According to custom of those days, she used to remain engaged in the remembrance of Allah almighty with effect from her childhood. When she became young then she was embodied picture of chastity and modesty. She became pregnant by the Command of Allah Almighty without touching by any male mankind and on completion of prescribed period; Jesus (peace be upon him) was born from her womb. Mention of Mary (peace be upon her) is necessary in this Scripture, so that the people may be saved from misunderstanding. After being adult, Mary (peace be upon her) went into a separate abode from other people for taking bath, and she drew the curtain between other members of her family. At that time, Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) appeared before her in perfect human form, who was sent by Allah Almighty.

Commentary

When Prophet John (peace be upon him) was born, he was intelligent and wise with effect from the beginning. He (peace be upon him) used to remain away from playing and needless matters, distinguish between good and bad things, and avoid from evil deeds. He (peace be upon him) was very soft-hearted, obedient, righteous, and used to treat the entire people with kindness and benevolence. By birth, his heart had been filled with love and fear of Allah Almighty. After reciting the Scripture of God Almighty (Torah), he used to understand well its aim and meanings. From the matters which were forbidden in it, he used to abstain, and perform those works for which it was commanded in Torah. He was very obedient of his parents, neither a persistent and nor an obstinate. He was pure from arrogance and mischief. Allah Almighty sent unto him Divine Revelation and kept him safe from confusion and dissatisfaction with effect from his birth to death and even after death to the Day of Resurrection.

Commentary

At last that moment reached and the token appeared. It was habit of Zachariah (peace be upon him) that he used to preach and advise the people. According to custom; he came out for the same purpose but could not speak. He (peace be upon him) was not sick but quite healthy. He (peace be upon him) understood that mercy of Allah Almighty has been descended.

It has been mentioned in this verse that when Zachariah (peace be upon him) came out before the people from the sanctuary, he signified and said: Be thankful to Allah Almighty for His bounties in the morning and in the evening, that is to say, you should repeat with tongue “Sub-haanAllaah” (Good God, Heavens be praised). In short, tongue of Zachariah (peace be upon him) could not work, but he continued telling the people with signals that which was possible to explain.

Ultimately, after completion of the period of pregnancy, John (peace be upon him) was born and brought up among the righteous people. When he became able to use his sense properly, at that time he became a virtuous young man. Allah Almighty appointed him as a Prophet and he began to do the work of his father Zachariah (peace be upon them) i.e. preaching and advising the people. An Angel brought a Message from Allah Almighty that: O John! Your father has become old and feeble. Allah Almighty has bestowed you power and physical strength. You are a young man. You should use your entire strength for acting upon the commandments mentioned in the Scripture of God (Torah) and persuading the people also to follow the same. Now this work is not in your father’s control. Now you should take over this responsibility with determination and courage at the place of your father.

Commentary

Hayyinun – (easy, not difficult, simple), it is an adjective from hawn. Hawn means “gentleness, easiness etc.” actually this word is hay-wi-nun. “There is a contraction of wi into y.

La-yaalin – (nights), this word is plural of laylatun, which means “a night”.

Sa-wiyyun – (with no bodily defect, correct), it is an adjective also from sa-wa-ya. Sayyun means “to be equal and correct from all sides, to be at level”. Sa-wiyyun means “healthy”.

On showing surprise by Zachariah (peace be upon him), the Angel said: It has been commanded by Allah Almighty that a son will be born at your home in the same condition. He commands: Entire causes and reasons are in Our Grip. There was a time when you were nothing. Understand from it that Who produced you before John, He will create John also.

It is commanded: Token of settlement regarding pregnancy will be that your tongue will not be able to speak any thing for three days and nights, and being healthy in all respect; you will not be able to discuss any matter with any other. When this condition will appear then you should consider that the pregnancy has been settled and the infant will be born after completion of his tenure in mother’s womb.

7.  (It was said unto him): O Zachariah! Lo! We bring thee tidings of a son whose name is John; We have given the same name to none before (him).

8.  He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached infirm old age?
7.  Yaa-Zakariyyaaa  ‘inNaa  Nu-bashshiruka  bi-gulaami-nismuhuu  Yahyaa,  lam  Naj-‘al-lahuu  min-  qablu  samiyyaa.

8.  Qaala  Rabbi  ‘annaa  yakuunu  lii  gulaamunw-wa  kaanatimra-‘atii  ‘aaqiranw-wa  qad  balagtu  minal-  kibari  ‘itiyyaa.

Commentary

Samiyyun – (a name-sake, cognominal), it is an adjective from the word sa-ma-wa, origin of which is sumuwwun. Sumuwwun means “to become high, to become public or manifest, to appear”. The word “’ism” (name, denomination etc.) has been derived from the same.

‘itiyyun – (to become an infirm old person), origin of this word is ‘a-ta-wa. ‘Utuwwun and ‘itiyyun (both) are used in the same meanings, that is to say, to overstep bounds, to cross the limit.

Desire of Prophet Zachariah (peace be upon him) was accomplished. In reply of supplication, Allah Almighty sent tidings unto him that: O Zachariah! We cause to hear you good news of a son, whose name should be John. This name is uncommon because no person of this name has been born so far in the world.

It was the Will of Allah Almighty that the work of guidance of God’s many servants, which has been running by means of Zachariah (peace be upon him), should be continued after him also. Therefore, his supplication was accepted and tidings of a prosperous by birth; son was given. As soon as he (peace be upon him) heard this good news, he thought about own condition as well as his wife, then he was very much surprised. Plea of prayer in the Court of his Lord came into his hand. He made a request: O my Lord! There is no doubt in Your Omnipotence but it is very astonishing that how a son will be born at my home? Apparently there is no chance. My wife is barren permanently whereas I have reached infirm old age. No flexibility has remained in my body due to old age now. I have been living with Your kindness, otherwise physical strength, flesh, skin and blood in body are less than requirement.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

5.  Lo! I fear my kinsfolk after me, since my wife is barren. So, give me from Thy Presence a successor-

6.  Who shall inherit of me and inherit (also) of the house of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, acceptable (unto Thee).
5.  Wa  ‘innii  khiftul-mawaalya  minw-waraaaii  wa  kaana-timra-‘atii  ‘aaqiran  fahab  lii  mil-ladunka  waliyyaa.

6.  Yarisunii  wa  yarisu  min  ‘aali  Ya’-quuba  waj-‘alhu  Rabbi  raziyyaa.

Commentary

‘Aaqiran – (barren), adjectively this word is feminine because that attribute which cannot be in a masculine, is surely feminine as haa-‘iz (that who is under the monthly discharge course - menstruating), such person can be a women only instead of a man. The ‘aaqir is the subject, origin of which is ‘aqara. ‘Aqara means that barren woman who is unable to produce any child.

Zachariah (peace be upon him) is praying in the Court of God Almighty: O my Lord! You accepted my supplication always. I am afraid of my relatives because they are not courteous. I fear that as soon as I shall die, they will not be able to guide the people unto righteous works. I am old and my wife is barren too. You have all powers. Give me a son who may operate the work of peoples’ guidance at my place, so that this duty is not withdrawn from the Children of Jacob (peace be upon him). It seems that there is none behind me who may perform this duty. O my Lord! Give me such son who should be able to do those works which are performed by the Prophets (peace be upon them). He should be honorable in the sight of everyone with regard to his habits and manners. All people should like him and be attracted of him. He should meet my approval and be acceptable to You.

Here, the aim from “a successor” is the same as explained above. Otherwise, neither Zachariah (peace be upon him) was a king and nor had too much wealth and property, for holding up of which; would be required to ask for a son. He (peace be upon him) himself was a carpenter and used to run the expenditures of himself and his wife from the wages of this profession. He (peace be upon him) was desirous of a successor for the work of religious preaching only.
