Commentary

Samiyyun – (a name-sake, cognominal), it is an adjective from the word sa-ma-wa, origin of which is sumuwwun. Sumuwwun means “to become high, to become public or manifest, to appear”. The word “’ism” (name, denomination etc.) has been derived from the same.

‘itiyyun – (to become an infirm old person), origin of this word is ‘a-ta-wa. ‘Utuwwun and ‘itiyyun (both) are used in the same meanings, that is to say, to overstep bounds, to cross the limit.

Desire of Prophet Zachariah (peace be upon him) was accomplished. In reply of supplication, Allah Almighty sent tidings unto him that: O Zachariah! We cause to hear you good news of a son, whose name should be John. This name is uncommon because no person of this name has been born so far in the world.

It was the Will of Allah Almighty that the work of guidance of God’s many servants, which has been running by means of Zachariah (peace be upon him), should be continued after him also. Therefore, his supplication was accepted and tidings of a prosperous by birth; son was given. As soon as he (peace be upon him) heard this good news, he thought about own condition as well as his wife, then he was very much surprised. Plea of prayer in the Court of his Lord came into his hand. He made a request: O my Lord! There is no doubt in Your Omnipotence but it is very astonishing that how a son will be born at my home? Apparently there is no chance. My wife is barren permanently whereas I have reached infirm old age. No flexibility has remained in my body due to old age now. I have been living with Your kindness, otherwise physical strength, flesh, skin and blood in body are less than requirement.
