Chapter Maryam (Mary) – 19

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

18.  She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the Beneficent One from thee, if thou art God-fearing.

19.  He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may bestow on thee a pure son.

20.  She said: How can I have a son when no mortal hath touched me, neither have I been unchaste?
18.  Qaalat  ‘inniii  ‘a-‘uuzu  bir-Rahmaani  minka  ‘in-  kunta  taqiyyaa.

19.  Qaala  ‘innamaaa  ‘anaa  rasuulu  Rabbiki  li-‘ahaba  laki  gulaaman-  zakiyyaa.

Commentary

Bagiyyun – (unchaste), it is an adjective from the word bigyun, which means “to demand, to seek”. In idioms, it is used for “unchaste, an adulteress and sinful woman”.

Mary (peace be on her) said to him: From your form, it seems that you are undefiled and abstinent, but coming in unhesitatingly like this; is cause of doubt and wonderful. If you are sincere then certainly there would be fear of God Almighty in your heart. I am hopeful from His Mercy that He will save me from your evil.

In short, she (peace be on her) spoke as a chaste and God-fearing woman should speak at such occasion. The Angel (peace be on him) said: I am an Angel. Suspicion from me side is needless. Your Lord has sent me unto you and commanded that I should give you a pure son.

Mary (peace be on her) was satisfied from it that from the side of an Angel, there would be no such evil as she had been imagining. But after being fearless, she became brave and was very surprised that how a son could be born from her, whereas neither any husband she had and nor any contraband relationship she kept with any man.
