Commentary

Sha’-ni – (affair, matter, thing to be done), this word has several meanings in Arabic language. It indicates towards any condition of every heart. Here it aims “affair, point, subject or duty”.

The people of Arab were famous in fearlessness and bravery. Their nature was very afraid of obedience. It was the devotion of the Messenger, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) that he made them mankind by his natural civility. It was great kindness of Allaah Almighty that their persons of high rank understood the Holy Qur’an and directed them unto guidance by its influence. Way of working together and mutual behavior has been explained in its chapters revealed in Madinah, in which chapters like Suratul-Baqarah, ’An-Nuur and ‘Al-‘Ahzaab are very prominent.

It was described in the first part of this verse: You should ask leave of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) if you desire to leave and go away from an important assembly. After that it is being commanded to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): Give him permission of leaving the assembly who asks leave and to whom you consider suitable, and then ask forgiveness of Allaah Almighty for him, because leaving the assembly is as disobedience on condition that it is not due to any natural requirement. Allaah Almighty will forgive to such kind of people who go away from the assembly due to any compulsion.

Then it is commanded: Rank of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is highest among you. So you should never adopt careless behavior with him as you do with one another mutually yourselves.
