Comparison between Paradise and the tree
of Zaqqum
Chapter “Saaaffaat” - (Those who set the Ranks) – 37
‘A-‘uu-zu Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah
from Satan the outcast)
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ 62
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَٰهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّٰلِمِينَ 63
إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِىٓ أَصْلِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ 64
طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ 65

62. Is this better as a
welcome, or the tree of Zaqquum?
63. Lo! We have
appointed it a torment for wrongdoers.
64. Lo! it is a tree
that springeth in the bottom of Hell-
65. Its crop is as it
were the heads of devils.

62. ‘A-zaalika khayrun-nuzulan ‘am
Shajaratuz-Zaqquum.
63. ‘Innaa ja-‘alNaahaa fitnatal-liz-zaalimiin.
64. ‘Innahaa shajaratun
takhruju fiii ‘aslil-Jahiim.
65. Tal-‘uhaa ka-‘annahuu
ru-‘uusush-shayaatiin.

Commentary
Zaqquumi – every such thing; eating of which
becomes an affliction for oneself. This is a Noun from the word zaqam,
which means “to swallow”. Zaqquumun means “swallowing of which was
difficult but swallowed and became cause of pain in the belly”.
Ru-‘uusush-shayaatiin – (heads of the devils), i.e. in very inelegant form. Raas meas
“head”. Shayaatiin is plural of Shaytaan, which means “the Devil”.
It aims “the hood of the snake”.
The condition, in which the Believers of Allaah
Almighty and His sincere obedient people will be on the Day of Resurrection,
was described in the previous verses. Moreover, state of those people has been
related in these verses who did not believe in Allaah Almighty,
disobeyed unhesitatingly in the world; His Commandments and Sayings of His
Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him).
It is commanded: You heard the circumstances of
the heavenly people that how they will be entertained. Delicious fruits of good
color for food, tasty and sweet wine for their drinking will be provided to
them in the Garden. Signify now! Whether this entertainment is better or that
mistreatment which will be for those who disobeyed Allaah Almighty?
Listen! We have prepared a tree of Zaqquum in lieu of their all kinds of
food and drinking, which will be reason of great calamity for them when they
will take it because they will have nothing except it for eating and drinking
when they will be hungry and thirsty. At first, swallowing it will be very
difficult, but when they will swallow it then it will trouble them in the
belly. Root of this tree will be in the bottom of the Hell but its branches
will be spreading in the entire Hell. Its fruit will be like the hood of the
snake. We have made this tree a torment for the wrongdoers.
After hearing the name of Zaqquum, the
careless people began to laugh and say: How a tree can grow in the Fire?
Moreover, while in the language of so and so country, the name of Zaqquum
is used for “a date and butter”, then we shall enjoy it.
In this regard too, mention of Zaqquum
became more cause of torment of the Doomsday for the disbelievers and the
wrongdoers in the world, because they began to be arrogant after hearing this.
