35. And the idolaters
say: Had Allah willed, neither we had worshipped aught beside Him, nor our
fathers, nor had we forbidden aught without (command from) Him. Even so did
those before them. Are the messengers charged with aught save plain
conveyance (of the message)?

Commentary
It is commanded: You did not understand knowledge
and wisdom of Allah Almighty. He has kept established the arrangement of the
world on such Law that the sinful people are not punished immediately. At first
they are caused to understand by means of the Messengers (peace be upon them)
that they should understand the Divine Law. If He had willed, all mankind had
been guided unto the Straight Path. But it was demand of His Wisdom that power
of choice and respite should be given to the mankind, so that after
understanding he should try to correct himself. It is not right which you say
that He did not forbid you from the belief in a plurality of God.
Messengers of Allah Almighty (peace be upon them)
and His Scriptures have caused to know clearly about the badness of the belief
in a plurality of God. What is cure of it if you disregard them? Your saying
that “we and our forefathers did the same always, but nothing was happened. We
made lawful whatsoever we willed and made unlawful what we wished. No one ever
was to ask”, is untrue. The Messengers (peace be upon them) continued causing
to understand the Truth. Ancient people also used to say the same. At last they
were punished. Like them, even if you did not accept the Truth, certainly you too
will be punished properly.
