16.  Lahum  fiihaa  maa  yashaaa-‘uuna  khaalidiin.  Kaana  ‘alaa  Rabbika  wa’-dam-mas-‘uulaa.

Commentary

Mas-‘uulan – (was asked, was argued), this word has come out from su-‘aal, which means “to ask for, to beg”. Mas-‘uul means “that promise about which it is being caused to understand that it will be fulfilled certainly”.

It was commanded in the previous verse: At first Allaah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) described the commandments of Holy Qur’an, and then prevented the people from wicked deeds. Those who abstained from evil works in the world and obeyed those commandments with free-will and pleasure; for which they were ordered to do, they will be gathering in the Attractive Garden on the Day of Resurrection. The same Garden will be their abode for ever as a reward of their good deeds.

In this verse, state of that Garden has been narrated more clearly. It is commanded: Besides availability of abode in the Garden for ever, every that thing will be provided to them which will they desire, not for one or two times but when and how much will they desire, will be fulfilled every time without increase or decrease.

After that it is commanded: This Garden, desire of living in which will always be fulfilled, is not any such thing, mention of which has been made to please the hearers without conceiving. It is Promise of your Lord, which certainly will be fulfilled. Therefore He has permitted to His slaves that they should pray for its fulfilling.

As though, they have been informed in their worldly life that after complying with the commandments of Allaah Almighty, they are permitted to have full hope of dwelling in the Garden, and for this purpose they should supplicate always in these words: Our Lord! Bestow us abiding in the Garden for ever as a reward. Such kind of supplications has been taught to abstinent Believers in Holy Qur’an and Sayings of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). There is a hint in it that we should keep the promise of Allaah Almighty in mind and do good works regularly.
