been among the generations before you men possessing a remnant (of good
sense) to warn (their people) from corruption in the earth, as did a few of
those whom We saved from them! And the wrongdoers kept indulging in luxuries
and were guilty.

Commentary
Law-laa – this word has been used
earlier also. Deposition of dissatisfaction and threat manifests from it. Above
mentioned verse has been started from this word, that is to say, the evil came
upon them due to the reason that there were no such people among them who
possess remnant of goodness, who prevent the people from wrongdoing and
tyranny, and who forbid them from committing wicked deeds. There were only a
few such people who had turned away from evildoing by obeying their Messengers
(peace be upon them). But they did not have so much power that they could
prohibit any person from evil deeds.
Besides them, other people were in such condition
that they were fond of luxurious enjoyment. They used to disregard advice of
any Wise person and spend their precious time and money on useless works,
absurd amusements and sports. According to Divine Law, such all people were
guilty. So at last, they were ruined by the wrath of Allah Almighty. Only those
people were saved who began to obey the commandments of their Prophets (peace
be upon them).
Ba-qiyya-tun – (remnant, that
which is left, remainder), it aims “effect of remaining goodness”.
‘Ut-rifuu – {(they) kept indulging (in
luxuries)}, it is past passive voice from the word ‘itraafun, which has
been derived from tarafa. Tarafa means prosperity. ‘Ut-rifuu means
“luxurious things were provided to them”.
