night, and afterward we will surely say unto his heir: We witnessed not the
destruction of his household; and lo! we are truthtellers.

Commentary
Lanubayyi-tannahuu – (we will kill him by night),
this word has come out from nubayyitu, which has been derived from tab-yiit.
Tab-yiit means “to do any work by night”. The word bayyata (past
tense of the same) has passed in 4th Chapter, where it meant “secret
counseling”. Here it aims “to attack unawares by night”.
When evil comes upon any nation, some such mischievous people
grow into it who have to do nothing but to trouble others. Their main objects
are beating and striking, plundering and robbing, cheating and deceiving,
bloodshed, following own wishes without let or hindrance, hating and disgracing
righteous people etc.
It is commanded: There were nine great rascal persons in Hajar
City of Thamud who had made their separate groups and who used to cause
corruption and make mischief in the land instead of amending its affairs. They
were gathered at a place for making a decision. They said: Let us take a mutual
oath by Allaah that we will attack and kill Salih (peace be upon
him) by night, him and his family. Then if any of his executors claimed of
bloodshed, we will belie clearly; saying: we do neither know and nor did we witness
their destruction. We were not present at the spot to see.
