Commentary
When the cup-bearer
of the king (released fellow-prisoner of Joseph) returned unto the king and
described the interpretation of his dream, which was explained by Joseph (peace
be upon him), he was astonished by observing His wisdom. At once; he ordered:
Bring Him unto me.
Joseph (peace be
upon him) had passed many years in the prison. It was a demand of such
situation that He would have broken into a passion with pleasure and moved with
the messenger, but His (peace be upon him) prudence did not permit Him to make
haste. He thought: A false charge was liable to come upon Me. How can I show My
face to the people with that accusation?
He (Joseph) (peace
be upon him) said to the messenger of the king: You should go back to the king
and say that he should, at first (for proving My innocence), call those women
who cut their hands and on the basis of their opinion, I was found guilty and
imprisoned. And the king should ask the women to speak the truth about that
happening, so that the actual occurrence is disclosed before the people. Allah
Almighty is my Lord Who is already Aware of their guile.
The king considered
it suitable that this matter should be cleared immediately. Therefore, he sent
for those women. When they reached, he asked from them in such a way as he is actually
aware of that entire happening; but he is desirous to know only “Did you ask an
evil act of Joseph; thinking that He is an evildoer or otherwise?”
