Commentary

‘As-haabal-Kahfi  war-Raqiimi – (the people of the Cave and the Inscription), Kahf means “a wide cave”, the Cave under reference was in a valley between the mountains at low level land which is called “a cavern”, name of which was Raqiim.

Fityatun – (the young men), origin of this word is fata-yun.

Hayyi-’un – {Shape (for us)}, it is a word of command from the word tah-yi-‘atun, which has become tahiyyatun after the contradiction of one letter into another and the act of making less. Tahiyyatun means “to shape, to prepare, to make etc.”

Rashadaa – (Straight, rectitude, development), the right path; going on which; becomes means of deliverance.

There is no wonder in the omnipotence of Allah Almighty. These people ask from you about the circumstances of those people who chose a Cave as their dwelling which was situated in the Raqiim Valley, because a cruel King began to compel the people that they should adore him and his idols.

Those young men who made the Cave their abode, were followers of Messenger Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) and used to worship Allah Almighty only. For escaping from the oppression of that king, they had made a Cave their dwelling place in between the mountains, and by hiding themselves from the King, they used to engage themselves in the adoration of God, the Most High.

They prayed: Our Lord! Bestow upon us Your Mercy and help us in that work in which we are busy, and make arrangement for our deliverance from this misfortune.

Then their circumstances have been described and explained that Allah Almighty arranged for them to get rid of their difficulties which was a Portent of His Omnipotence. Like them, we should also try to remain always steadfast on the Belief after hearing their story.
