They would not be able to bow their heads

Chapter “YAA-SIIIN” - (YASIN) - 36

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

7.  Certainly the Word hath been proved true of most of them, so they will not believe.

8. Lo! We have put on their necks carcans reaching unto the chins, so that they are made stiff-necked.
7.  Laqad  haqqal-Qawlu  ‘alaaa  ‘aksarihim  fahum  laa yu’-minuun.

8.  ‘Innaa  ja-‘alNaa  fiii  ‘a’-naaqihim  ‘aglaalan  fahiya  ‘ilal-‘azqaani  fahum-muqmahuun.

Commentary

Muqmahuuna – {they are with heads (kept) aloft, made stiff-necked}, this word is plural of muqmahun, which has been derived from ‘iqmaahun. Its origin is qam-hun, which means “to raise the head up”. ‘Iqmaahun means “to put on a collar in the neck so much hard that the neck may not be bent downward”.

It is commanded: Some of these people will be so much hard-hearted that they will not pay attention to the verses of Holy Qur’an. Jollity of the world would have fascinated their hearts so much that they would neither listen to you {O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him)} and nor believe in you. They would have been involved in following the customs and traditions of their forefathers and desire of wealth and property so much that they would be careless from hearing the voice of the truth. Their evil days would have surrounded them from all around. When their carelessness would increase so much, then they would be seized by Our prescribed perpetual Law, and We shall put their adopted customs and traditions on their necks like shackles. And their carcans would be so much tight that they would not be able to bend forth their necks. Habit of considering oneself greater than others will not let their heads bow. They would be hopping and skipping in such condition like obstinate calves. These shackles would control their chins due to which it would not be possible for them that they may bow their heads.

In these verses, sketch of those peoples’ behavior has been drawn whose carelessness has been increased more than enough. They don’t care in any condition and consider that everything is only this world. They don’t try to understand this fact that the life of this world is only for a few days and every individual will have to die. So we should listen to them who convey the News of the next life.
