Support of a trunk of the palm-tree

Chapter Maryam (Mary) – 19

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

23.  And the pangs of childbirth drove her unto the trunk of the palm-tree. She said: Oh, would that I had died ere this and had become a thing of naught, forgotten!

24.  Then (one) called her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee.
23.  Fa-‘ajaaa-‘ahal-makhaazu  ‘ilaa  jiz-‘innakhlah.  Qaalat  yaa-laytanii  mittu  qabla  haazaa  wa  kuntu  nasyam-man-siyyaa.

24.  Fa-naadaahaa  min-  tahti-haaa  ‘allaa  tahzanii  qad  ja-‘ala  Rabbuki  tahtaki  sariyyaa.

Commentary

Nasyam-man-siyyan – (a thing of naught, forgotten), these both words have been derived from na-sa-ya, from which; a word “nisyaan” has come out. Nisyaan means “oblivion, forgetfulness”. As idioms, both words are used collectively. Nas-yun is used for the thing which is thrown away after becoming useless and then no one thinks about it. Mansiyyun is passive voice from the word nisyaan, which means “the thing which has been forgotten”.

Sariyyun – (rivulet, a fountain, a spring), it is an adjective which means “to flow silently. From the same; a word “’israa-‘un” has come out, which was discussed in the beginning. Here it aims “a rivulet” (water begins to come out from the earth like a spring and flow silently).

It is commanded: When Mary (peace be upon her) travailed, she went restlessly alone unto the jungle and got support of the trunk of a palm-tree which had been grown on a dune. She (peace be upon her) had been suffering from various difficulties i.e. pangs of the childbirth, thought of infamy and disgrace; and loneliness etc. Naturally it came out from her mouth: Would that I had died before this happening and the people had forgotten me entirely! Meanwhile she (peace be upon her) heard the voice of Gabriel Angel (peace be upon him) from below her: Don’t worry and nor grieve! Allah Almighty has arranged to comfort you. Whenever He desires to do something, He makes for it a suitable arrangement also. Below the dune on which you are, a spring of pure water has begun to rush out with the Power of Allah Almighty. It is the arrangement of water which is most necessary thing.
