Commentary

Khatbun –(circumstance, matter, problem),

Ri-‘aaa-‘un – (shepherds), this word is plural of raa-‘ii, which has been derived from ra’-yun. Ra’-yun means “to graze, to feed on grass”. Raa-‘ii means “shepherd”.

‘Is-tihyaa-‘un (and the meaning of yastah-yii) – (to be ashamed, to blush, to show confusion by growing red in the face).

When Moses (peace be upon him) saw two women standing aside with their goats, he went forth toward them and asked: Why are you standing separate from all other people and why do you not water your flock like others? They answered: We water our goats then when all shepherds take back their cattle after watering them. Our father has become weak being aged. Therefore we have to come; otherwise he himself would have come. Moses (peace be upon him) was hungry and tired, even then he could not bear that the weak women remain standing helplessly. He (peace be upon him) repelled the people from the well, pulled the water himself from it, watered the goats of the women, sent them back to their home and then; returned, took rest under the shade and said: My Lord! I have no support save Yours. I am needy of Your kindness.

Meantime, one of those two women came toward him (peace be upon him) walking with shyness like chaste women.
