Quran Chapter 33: 36b & 37a (Pt-22, Stg-5) (L-2597) درس قرآن

Zainab was Messenger’s cousin – (2)

Chapter ’Al-‘Ahzaab” - (The Clans) - 33

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

But there was a great difference in their temperament {i.e. Zayd and Zainab (May Allaah be pleased with them)} and they began to quarrel daily with each other. Zayd used to come and complain before the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): It is better than quarreling every day that I should divorce Zainab.

From here, the description of this verse begins. It is commanded: On Zayd; Allaah Almighty has conferred favor that He guided him to embrace Islam and you have conferred favor that you adopted him as your son and got him married with your paternal cousin sister. When he wished to divorce her due to wrangling, you caused him to understand that there would be indignity of a noble woman in it, so he should not divorce her, fear Allaah and keep his wife to himself.

There were some thoughts in your heart O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) behind this advice which you had not disclosed:

1.  Zainab accepted marrying with Zayd on your saying against her will. She would suffer a shock after divorce, which can be compensated in this way that you should marry her yourself for the desire of pleasing her.

2.  It was revealed by Allaah Almighty for manifesting distinction between adopted son and real son that when Zayd would divorce her wife, then you should marry Zainab.

3.  There was fear in it that the people will talk about you falsely after your marriage with Zainab, and they will try to incline other people to distrust in the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him); by which they will spoil their Hereafter and try to asperse Islam due to this plea.

For such kind of thoughts, it has been commanded in this verse: O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)! You were afraid of it that the people will defame you due to this occurrence and make it source of disgracing Islam. Fearing people is contrary to your dignity. It is a Right of only Allaah Almighty that every individual should fear Him. There is none save Him from whom you should fear.

After that, it happened which was required.

Zayd divorced Zainab (May Allaah be pleased with them). After expiry of the term of probation incumbent upon Zainab in consequence of dissolution of marriage with Zayd by divorce, it was revealed by Allaah Almighty: We have tied your nuptial knot with Zainab. Further discussion on this matter will be explained in the next lesson.
