Commentary

Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) used to say or do nothing without the Commandment of Allaah Almighty, even Allaah Almighty used to decide and command for his ordinary matters too. Common commandments about marriage and divorce had been revealed. Even then, the Commandments concerning the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and his wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) were explained particularly in this verse, so that there should remain no doubt that whatever he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) did, was quite according to the Command of Allaah Almighty.

Accordingly, it is commanded: We have made lawful for you all those women who exist in your nuptial at this time, whether those are from the Qureysh or others, refugees (who followed the Messenger on his departure from Makkah to Madinah) or otherwise. Moreover those, whom your right hand possesses, have been given to you by the Command of Allaah Almighty as spoils of war, and those also are lawful for you without marriage.

Like this, it is lawful for you to wed the daughters of your paternal uncles, paternal aunts, maternal uncles and maternal aunts on the condition that they had emigrated to Madinah. Found from it is that limit of marriage up to four women has not been fixed for the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), because there are many advices in his limitless marriages. And the consent of Allaah Almighty is with it.
