Commentary
The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace
be upon him) passed nearly twenty five years of his initial life in solitude.
After that, he married with Khadija, the great (May Allaah be
pleased with her), who had been widow twice. After her death, he (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him) married Aisha the daughter of Abu
Bakr Siddique (May Allaah be pleased with them). Then eight widow
women (May Allaah be pleased with them) became Messenger’s wives. At the
time of the departure of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be
upon him), there were his nine wives – Aisha, Hafsa, Sawda,
Ummi Salma, Zainab, Ummi Habiba, Jawairiya, Safia
and Memona (May Allaah be pleased with them). They all gave up
thinking about the prosperity of the world and liked the willingness of the
Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). It was the reward
for them in the world which has been described in the above mentioned verses.
It is commanded: You (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) are
not allowed to take other women henceforth save those to whom We have made for
you lawful, nor that you should change them for other wives, whether you feel
them more beautiful and they please you.
Allaah Almighty knows that who abides by His Commandments and who does
not care. Therefore, we should do every work bearing it in mind. The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) was
given authority to keep his wives equal in all matters or as he desired. And
his wives had admitted clearly to obey his every command and they were willing
to accept his every decision. The aim from this all was that he (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him) should not loiter in religious works due to
being involved in domestic disputes. Even then, the Messenger (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him) took care of his wives’ rights equally, did
not reap advantage from the privileges granted to him by Allaah Almighty
and complied with entire works of preaching of the Religion. There was none who
might perform like him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).
