Commentary

It has been described earlier that entire members of the family of Noah (peace be upon him) rode in the ship, but a son named Yam, whose surname was Kan-aan, did not ride. Noah (peace be upon him) caused to understand him: Ride with us in the ship. But the heart of the son had been inclined in amusement with his friends, who were of the same nature. He had been living in the house of Noah (peace be upon him), but was a vagabond. Companions of Noah (peace be upon him) were of simple disposition. They were not fond of luxurious things, jollity, a fair or mocking talks. Contrary to this, he used to see bloom of life in the people of city and like to pass his time and engage in merriments with them.

Messenger Noah (peace be upon him) would have thought that his thoughts would be correct due to perplexity and confusion at the time of disaster, and after observing the people drowning in the storm of water; he will ride in the ship with them, and when he would slip away from his evildoer friends then he would adopt the behavior of good people automatically.

He (Noah - peace be upon him) could not guess that he (son) has got out of temper. When he replied carelessly on the call of Noah (peace be upon him) that: I am not necessitous of any ship. I shall climb on any high peak of the mountain. Then Noah (peace be upon him) was disappointed from his side. In the meanwhile, suddenly a wave of water came in between them and carried him flowing away.

Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) was worried but at that time He (peace be upon him) could not speak before the Dignity of Allah Almighty. When the hurricane subsided and the ship took rest upon a mount, then He (peace be upon him) prayed in the Court of God Almighty: O my Lord! Lo! He was my son and of my household. Thou hast promised to save my household. Saying only this, He (peace be upon him) was silent respectfully.
